About me and my therapy practice

I care warmly about supporting people and provide an emotion focused integrative approach. I encourage change that is right for each person by offering an empowering approach and suggest coping skills, as appropriate.

I regularly work with clients who have experienced previous short term therapy and feel ready to truly gain more in-depth understanding of themselves and any default patterns and behaviours.

Whatever you’re experiencing, I will jointly work with you towards your therapy goals and adapt how I work to suit your individual needs.

During therapy it can be helpful to explore deeply to gain insight and increase self awareness. Counselling offers support by talking through things and we will untangle your thoughts and feelings together so that you can build on coping strategies and highlight what is currently in your control, to change.

I am a BACP accredited Psychotherapist/Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor and have approximately 12 years experience working with people, age 16 and over. During this time, I have achieved various psychological qualifications and gained extensive experience working within private practice, NHS, EAPs, Universities, Charities, Voluntary sector. I am registered with BUPA, AXA, Aviva, & Vitality Health.

Please contact me if you would like to find out more.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Warmest Wishes

Andrea

Practice description

I am accredited in Counselling for Depression (CfD); a person-centred experiential therapeutic model, integrating elements of emotion-focused therapy. I will facilitate therapy exploration so that you can reflect on your experience; identifying and developing a better understanding of yourself and how interpersonal messages can affect mood. Using CfD we can explore the emotional problems that underpin depression, highlighting the intrapersonal messages that you may experience, which contribute to the maintenance of depressive symptoms; such as, an overly critical self perception that contrasts with how you are actually perceived by others.

Focus on yourself may initially seem like a strange concept especially if you’ve always been used to putting others first. During therapy, you will be gently encouraged to make positive changes to self-perceptions and your life. Self-discrepancy can arise and be maintained by events and relationships, resulting in internal self-conflict, excessive self-criticism and unresolved loss or trauma. Maybe you feel responsible for others, and find it hard to set healthy boundaries or to say no. We will identify your processes and any occurring emotional imbalance, and highlight areas for more focused work to reduce the intensity of burdensome feelings. This will offer you some clarity and the opportunity to make better choices and subsequently do what feels best for you.

Integrating a psychotherapy approach can enable us to get to the root of the problem to overcome longstanding emotional or behavioural issues. Sometimes old patterns can be unconsciously repeated, therefore, understanding the origins of our feelings and responses can empower us to approach life differently.

My first session

I understand that seeking help and accessing therapy can be a difficult step to take and it takes courage to make that first step. Often people feel more comfortable after their first contact.

Our first contact is usually a free 15 minute phone call. This is not a therapy session, however, we will discuss your therapy goals, expectations and determine if my approach may be suitable for you.  We will briefly talk about the difficulties you're going through.

If we both feel happy to progress, we'll organise the first therapy session. In the first session, it’s your time and opportunity to share your story. I'll ask questions about your history, your life and begin to build a picture of who you are, and what therapy approach may be helpful for you.

Therapy is a two way process and accessing therapy at the right time for you and being willing to give yourself a chance will make a difference in your therapy outcome.

It takes a varying amount of time for each person to achieve their therapy aims. We can work in an open ended way or we can agree a set amount of time/sessions, depending on what you need and want.

If at any time either of us feel that an alternative therapy approach or a different type of support may be most appropriate for you, we will discuss and agree the next steps.

Practice description

I offer warmth, understanding and tailor how I work to enable you to develop your practice by increasing self-awareness, knowledge and expertise

I will work collaboratively with you to aim for a deeper understanding of your clients’ needs and presentations.

You will be able to explore and to process what is happening for you, during the process. This reflection space will enable you to increase understanding about your work, bracket off where needed, and draw from your experiences.

My first session

We can discuss your requirements during an initial meeting and I will aim to get an idea of your therapy style and find out what you usually find effective during supervision.  We will explore what is helpful for you during supervision, to determine if we feel that we could work well together.

In this initial meeting, please feel free to ask me some questions to determine how I work as it’s essential that you find the right supervisor for you.
