About me and my therapy practice

I am flexible in how I work, adapting to the individual I work with, using my intuition and regularly checking in with my client to explore the experiences we are each having separately and together.

I am trained to work Psychoanalytically, although I rely on the core counselling skills of supportive and attentive collaboration. I tend to use the Relational Psychotherapy approach of promoting self-agency and aiding the making of meaning within the emotional experience that arises in the therapeutic relationship and my clients wider life.

I was an Buddhist Monk for 6 years in the Theravada tradition and I have been practicing mindfulness and meditation for three decades. I have found that being mindful in therapeutic reflection and in sharing vulnerability is a very powerful method element of the therapeutic process. I will bring mindfulness into sessions if it feels constructive for my client and myself.

I work with adults on a 121 basis and have experience working with anxiety, depression and challenges relating to relationships, work and life transitions (getting older, breakups, job losses, etc).

I am flexible in taking either a short term or an open ended approach, which will normally be informed by the reason someone has chosen to go into Psychotherapy, as well as other practicalities such as cost and time.

I have also had a 20 year career working in various management, executive and governance roles, in the charity and education sectors. I also provide business coaching and can provide a therapeutically informed approach to coaching.

Practice description

During Covid-19 I am only working remotely.

My preferred method is Zoom, but I would be able to also use Skype or other similiar platforms.

I am also able to work over the phone.

My first session

I will aim to form an early understanding of the reason my client has chosen to enter or explore Psychotherapy, principally by support them to think about their reasons and check my understanding is broadly correct.

By the end of the first session I would also expect to ensure I and my client are clear about key practical issues including costs, times, what to do if they with to make a complaint, etc.

The most important outcome of the first session is to ensure that there is an emerging sense of direction for both me and my client to work towards and check that both are happy to proceed on the journey together.
