About me and my therapy practice

About me

You may be looking for counselling after trying hard to resolve a problem on your own. I can help you explore your life and the challenges you face, with you. We will talk about your strengths and all the things you have already tried. Then you can decide how best I can help you.

Whatever the challenge you are facing, I believe that you are the expert in you and we can explore what might be the best approach to suit who you are. I am a pluralistic counsellor with training and experience in a variety of therapeutic approaches. Confidentiality, deep acceptance and genuine warmth are the main values that underpin my practice.

How can pluralistic counselling help?

Counselling works by tapping into your ability to resolve problems, learn and develop through talking to someone else: someone with the right knowledge, skills and experience.

Pluralistic therapy is all about being flexible and adapting to the needs of the individual. You are unique and a one-size-fits-all approach might not work for you. I start by getting to know you. How do your difficulties impact your life and what could things be like if they weren't there? I can develop a therapeutic relationship with you, and through this you can talk through and resolve the challenges you are facing. Your wisdom plus my wisdom is what will make the difference for you.

Practice description

My training is in pluralistic counselling.  Included in my training is Person-Centred Counselling, CBT, Psychoanalysis/Psychodynamic, Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, Brief Solution-Focussed Approach, amongst others.

I have extensive experience of working with people who have experienced trauma - PTSD and Complex PTSD.

Working with anyone starts with developing a therapeutic relationship and the core conditions of empathy, authenticity and unconditional positive regard help me to do this.  I take a neuroscience perspective to understand people and to develop a good working relationship.

My first session

Assessment and identifying goals

At your first session you will be able to tell me about your problem or difficulty; how that affects you in your everyday life; and how it might feel if things were better. This will help us to identify your goal for counselling. We will also discuss what approaches would be best for you. I will explore this in relation to where you want to get to, how long you want to work for and what suits you best. We will review as we go so if you want to adapt your goals or try something else then you can let me know.

Depending on your needs I will carry out an assessment of risk and check with you where you will get extra support if you need it while we are working together.

Your goals will help me to formulate a plan for your therapy.  The plan and approach will fit with what suits you best.  It is flexible and adaptable.
