About me and my therapy practice

My approach to counselling is very straight-forward: I support clients to move beyond difficulty to a way of life that feels better than they imagined. I don't do the hard work, you do, which is why we can expect the results to be long term rather than short lived.

As a Counsellor and Lecturer with a background in business, I work with a wide range of clients navigating change, disruption and disappointment in their home and professional lives.

My role is to support and challenge you through your own process of change, one which is constructed from a true understanding of yourself, how difficulty came about and how the world has shaped you. I often work with clients who have had counselling before and have decided to return in order to get to the bottom of what has troubled them. I want you to gain the maximum long term results from the time and energy you invest in yourself.

I work in weekly sessions, 4 session decision making blocks and 2 day self-optimisation programs (individual, couple, groups and retreats). Please see my Garden Gate Therapy website (www.gardengate.org.uk) further information and reviews.

I currently have availability for online and telephone counselling for clients in Sheffield.

My approach to counselling is very straight-forward: I support clients to move beyond difficulty to a way of life that feels better than they imagined.  I don't do the hard work, you do, which is why we can expect the results to be long term rather than short lived.

As a Counsellor with a background in business and lecturing, I work with a wide range of clients navigating change, disruption and disappointment in their home and professional lives.

I often work with clients who have had counselling before and have decided to return in order to get to the bottom of what has troubled them. I want you to gain the maximum long term results from the time and energy you invest in yourself.

I currently have availability for online and telephone counselling. I have some socially distanced walk and talk sessions available (the route is usually along Kemptown/Brighton seafront,  however this can be changed if an alternative route is preferred).

Practice description

My counselling training is integrative with a person centered core. This means that I believe each person is the expert on themselves, but that for many of us we explore this knowledge more effectively with the help of someone to support us. The integration of additional theoretical and practical tools can, for some people, improve their ability (or shorten the time it takes) to access understanding and build behaviours that enable them to thrive. My role is to have strong supportive shoulders so that you feel safe enough to share and take risks, knowing that I'm on your side rather than sitting in judgement.

Clients who choose me tend to be split equally between women and men, and the reason they say they chose me was that I seemed straight-forward and that my business experience might help when talking about the mix of their home and work lives. I also work with students/academics and people building their careers who choose me because I understand academia and the pressures inherent in starting and maintaining a career.

I live in a wide blended family and have spent many years as a single person, single parent, co-parent, step-parent. Navigating the many relationships involved is challenging and we don't always get it right, however hard we try. My work with individuals and couples in relation to their personal lives is non-judgmental and recognises the complexities of relational strain and break-down. Clients often work on communication, boundary setting, valuing themselves, taking responsibility (or confidently apportioning it to others) to bridge gaps which have become entrenched or seem insurmountable.

You can choose how you want to work and how long you want it to take. I offer one-off/weekly/monthly sessions, 4 session decision making blocks and 2 day self-optimisation programs (individual, couple, groups and retreats). Please see my Garden Gate Therapy website (www.gardengate.org.uk) further information and reviews.

My first session

This will follow a very simple structure:

* I inform you of the confidentiality and safeguarding regulations I am required to follow.

* You say what you can, what you want to and will not be under pressure to say more than you feel comfortable with (you've only just met me).

* You might ask me questions you need to know to see if I am the right counsellor for you.

* If you want me to, I give you some initial thoughts on what you have shared and an idea of how we might work together.

* I stress the importance of finding a counsellor you feel you can talk to easily and invite you to let me know if you'd like us to work together once you've had time to think about it. I will encourage you not to work with me if you feel you could find someone who would suit you better.

We will not:

* Fill in any forms or write anything down.

* Spend a long time talking about how we will work together (unless you want to).

Before the second session:

* You will be invited to complete a Client Contract which sets out the regulations I am required to follow and asks you some basic administrative questions.

* You will be invited to complete an optional Client Goals and Self-Assessment Form so that you can gather your thoughts about what you want to cover and decide if you have goals you would like to work on.
