About me and my therapy practice

I provide confidential sessions in a quiet, comfortable and relaxed environment; I can also offer telephone counselling from extensive experience with Samaritans and more recently have offered remote online sessions with my current clients.  We explore together topics that are getting in the way of life development. Finding ways forward, identifying changes that can be made and assisting in achieving realistic outcomes are the sort of support that really help.

My counselling experience consists of working with adults in private practice, and with adolescents for a local youth counselling charity, in the community and within school over the last 23 years. I have in addition spent six years counselling adult offenders within a prison setting.  More recently, since 2015, I am enjoying Supervising other Therapists for their own private practice work.

I offer concessions for trainee counselling students. The therapy room is on the ground floor, with one shallow step to the front door; and off road parking is available.

About me and my therapy practice

When I see clients for therapy, I am using concepts gained while studying psychology, such as child development, how we learn, understanding the deficits and needs of our childhoods; and our unique socialisation.  An appreciation of the emotional and identity work completed in teenage years and where this can founder sometimes comes into play. TA concepts have been useful in understanding how we internalise the messages from previous generations and those we are given in our upbringing that may still hold sway and power over us today.

I can choose to offer my qualification for the creative use of Art and Imaging within the therapy room; knowledge from my Supervision qualification and a more than passing interest in Transactional Analysis.  I have enjoyed dipping into various TA workshops on such subjects as "Amphitheatre of our Ancestors-working with the Parent Ego State," 'internalised introjects and the troubled child.  I introduce Visualisations in various forms in the therapy room on occasions.  This year I have taken a course entitled "Taking Your Counselling Practice Online," run by Bacp and the Open University which has proved useful, interesting and helpful for my current practice.

Practice description

My practice currently is not face to face in the room; I see clients mainly on screen via internet connection and otherwise have conducted sessions by phone where there is difficulty logging on for some reason.

I bring to the sessions knowledge, concepts and experience working in the statutory services for some thirty years with partially sighted, hard of hearing, some elderly clients and with children and families in social work. Those roles led me to study the theory of psychology, taking a BA Hons in Psychology.  I realised the therapeutic element of my previous work was where my interests lay and studied for a Humanistic Counselling qualification in 1998.

I have counselled female offenders in a prison setting, provided therapy for adolescents for a Youth Counselling Service, and worked with teenage boarders in a large Independent School over a period of some 18-20 years.

Alongside this varied work, I have had several years as Joint Manager for the Heads Together Youth Counselling Service under the YMCA umbrella; while also running my own Private Practice which continues to the current day.

My first session

In the first session, I like to hear how a new client has become the person they are and hope the client will give me a view of one of the most influencing experiences of their life that has impacted them greatly and means a lot to them in some way.

While we are getting to know each other, I will also take notice of details such as their state of mind, their current practical difficulties that are causing them distress such as not being able to sleep readily, or if they feel low in mood, if they feel at times they cannot go on with living.  These factors are all part of assessing what is needed, the current state of the client, what will help them, and what will keep them safe, and whether therapy is right for them at this moment.

While this knowledge is being sought other factors are coming in to play.  I am recognising what I am feeling about the client, I am testing out in my own emotions, noticing what rapport is building and if I can make a good working relationship with the client that will sustain them in their endeavours.

We will also address practical issues of whether the client can commit to regular sessions, what the frequency should be, which day and time will work best for us both, how we will communicate between sessions if the need arises. We will negotiate what costs we can agree to and finally we will set the next meeting date.
