About me and my therapy practice

My name is Liam Balloch, I am an experienced, qualified, and accredited Psychodynamic Counsellor. I qualified as a Counsellor in 2016, but have worked in the mental health sector for over 11 years. I have worked in various settings with a variety of people from all ages and backgrounds.

I offer a confidential, safe place to explore what is happening in your life, and work with you to try and understand it better so that you can create positive changes for yourself.

Practice description

In a nutshell the goal of Psychodynamic counselling is to " free people from the bonds of past experience in order to live more fully in the present." (Shedler, J, 2010). To me, this process sits at the heart of my practice.

The basic premise of the Psychodynamic approach is the belief that our behaviours and feelings are affected by our unconsious mind, and that the unconsious is filled with events from our childhood that are affecting our behaviours in the here and now. This approach believes that all behaviour has a cause, the aim of our counselling is to understand what that cause is, understand what unconsious behaviours are happening, and then interupt that pattern by making healthier choices in our behaviours and feelings.

The counselling is talking based, it relies heavily on our therapeutic relationship being healthy, meaning you (the client) feel safe enough to open up in a deep way with me (counsellor).

No counselling or therapy is easy! The process expects you to open up about painful things, it expects you to feel that pain in a deep fashion so that you can process that pain and move into a healthy place, I hope that I can help you facilitate that change for yourself.

My first session

Our first session consists of an assessment of your situation and circumstances, and your family history. Partly, this is to establish if I am the right counsellor for your needs, and also for you to see if I am the right counsellor for you.

Following this session we can agree a plan moving forward.
