About me and my therapy practice

My name is Angela Aspland I am a BACP accredited/UKCP registered Psychotherapist/Counsellor

I have 16 years experience of working in Private practice which have included working for Mind, the NHS and EAP (Employee Assistance program).

My core training is Psychodynamic psychotherapy. This approach will look at how our past may be affecting us in our present lives,   such as through loss, grief, and bereavement

Psychodynamic therapy focuses on unconscious processes.  The aims of psychodynamic therapy are self awareness and understanding the influence of the past on present behavior and ways of being.

I have experience as an Associate Tutor  at Leicester university and as a student supervisor for the Counselling certificate and Foundation degree level.  This has also included the delivery of workshops.

Practice description

I believe that we are all individual, and what has shaped us in our lives other therapeutic approaches may be helpful within the Psychodynamic approach.

I taught piano for 28 years and I believe that music and creativity can enable healing.

Where appropriate the use of visual images as a medium can be helpful for exploration such as the use of Photo Therapy.  This approach would look at images personal or non personal to your selves to enable exploration.  The images being able to speak where words cannot be found.

I have delivered Photo Therapy workshops at Leicester university and hope to continue in the future.

Therapeutic Photography is another visual medium and is easily accessible via the use of a camera. I have recently completed a course which enables me to run groups.  I believe the use of images via photography can be helpful in the following ways;

To help and understand the self, how we are seen, and how others see us and our place in the world.  I believe this approach can help us to connect to ourselves.

Art images,  writing and verse  are all creativity ways that can be used where appropriate within the therapeutic process that can help to enable change where words are not enough.

" The task of therapy is not to eliminate suffering but to give a voice to it, to find a form in which it can be expressed."

Stephen K, Levine.
