I offer counselling and psychotherapy sessions Monday - Thursday during the mornings and afternoons. At present I am fully booked and am not able to take on new counselling clients. However, you are welcome to contact me if you would like to discuss your situation with a view to waiting until I have space to schedule a regular appointment time with you.

About me and my therapy practice

I offer online and telephone counselling to young people (16yrs+) and adults. People seek counselling for a wide range of reasons. Perhaps something specific has happened which you want to talk through, perhaps it’s a whole combination of things. It might not be obvious exactly what is wrong but you know things are not quite right.

Whatever your reasons for coming, I will try to help you clarify difficult feelings, get to know and accept yourself better, think about the choices you have and consider any changes you might want to make in your life.

I will take you seriously and listen to you carefully without judgment or blame. I will pick out the key themes which emerge to clarify what is going on for you at the moment. People often feel relieved by this and you may find that this is all you need.

You may want to know how your attitudes, thoughts and feelings interlink and where they originate from in order to understand yourself better. I can help you to think more deeply about how your beliefs have been formed and how they are affecting you now.

You may want to consider changes you would like to make in your life. These could be about how you see yourself and others or how you make sense of your past and your future. They could be changes to how you take care of yourself day to day. Together we can think through changes you would like to make so these stay with you after the counselling sessions have finished.

For 14 years, I have counselled people in charities, schools, universities and community organisations. I have travelled widely over six continents and I believe this has helped me develop a curious and non-judgmental mindset towards the different ways people live their lives.

I am an Integrative therapist meaning I draw on a range of counselling theory and adapt to meet the needs of each person.

I am a fully qualified online therapist, offering therapy via video, telephone, instant message and email exchange.

Practice description

When meeting for online counselling it is important to be in a place where you will not be overheard and ideally where you won’t be interrupted. You will need to have strong Internet and telephone connection. You don’t need to be highly tech literate – I am very happy to talk you through how to use the technology if this would help you.

For online video sessions: I usually use software called Zoom to connect. This platform encrypts all data sent in transmission and does not require you to become a ‘contact’ with me, which helps to protect your confidentiality. You will need to download Zoom software to the device which you are going to use to connect to sessions; you will be prompted to set up an account but you can choose not to do this and still attend the session. I will send you a meeting invitation prior to each counselling session by encrypted email.

I also use Doxy.Me as an alternative to Zoom. This platform is designed for healthcare professionals, is secure and is fully encrypted. It does not require you to download any software on to your device.

For instant messaging sessions: I usually use Doxy.Me or Signal software. Both are encrypted, secure platforms. Doxy.Me does not save a copy of our conversation whereas Signal does. You can choose which you would prefer.

For email sessions: we agree a regular day when we will have a “session” which means this is the day when I will send you a therapeutic email. I will send you a brief acknowledgement of each email you send me, and one therapeutic email of up to 650 words on the agreed day. I use an email system called Frama RMail which is fully encrypted and secure. You are able to reply to me using this system without having to install any software yourself.

I am willing to discuss using another software platform to connect if you would prefer, though I may refuse to use it if I am not comfortable that its privacy settings are appropriate for therapeutic work.

My first session

I offer a free 30-minute initial conversation to talk through what is prompting you to seek counselling at the moment, to ask me any questions you have about my practice and consider whether we might work well together.

If we agree that counselling sessions together are both do-able and likely to be helpful, then I will email you an assessment form to complete and return by email, along with a copy of my standard counselling agreement and privacy statement for you to read. We will agree a time/day for a one-off assessment appointment. This assessment appointment lasts for up to 60 minutes and is charged at my standard session rate. The assessment appointment involves discussing your situation in depth, and considering what you would like to gain from counselling sessions. It is also an opportunity for you to see if you're comfortable speaking with me and whether you think I am the right counsellor to support you at the moment.

There is more information about counselling with me on my website www.paperplanecounselling.com. If you have any questions or you are interested in possibly working together, please do contact me. I aim to reply to messages within 48 hours.

I offer online and telephone supervision sessions Monday - Thursday during the mornings and afternoons.

About me and my therapy practice

I offer telephone and online clinical supervision to therapists (in training and qualified). I am based in Hull and work with people all over the UK as well as some other countries too. I supervise therapists working with children and adults in a range of settings including private practice, charities, schools and colleges.

I offer clinical consultation to people in related fields (e.g. teachers, support workers, supervisors of supervisors) on how best to support the people in their care.

I began supervising in 2013. I use two theoretical models of supervision to help guide my thinking and structure discussions. I use Hawkins and Shohet’s 7 eyed model to help me consider the dynamics of all the relationships which may be affecting your work; and Page and Wosket’s Cyclical Model to routinely structure supervision sessions.

I aim to build an accepting and empathic relationship so you feel secure enough to be honest and talk freely about your work. I encourage you to celebrate successes and explore challenging situations or dilemmas. Usually sessions take the form of a discussion relating to your counselling practice, with a mutually agreed focus, reflecting on one or more aspects of your work. What we talk about is up to you. At each meeting, I ask you what you want to get out of the discussion. I see my role primarily as helping you to reflect; offering new perspectives and guidance if you are stuck; and supporting you to develop professionally in line with your own aims and values.

Some people share transcripts or recordings of their work with me to reflect on these directly together (it’s up to you whether you want to do this).

As a Humanistic Integrative practitioner, I draw on theory from a number of therapeutic schools including Person Centred, Psychodynamic, CBT, Solution Focused, Gestalt, Mindfulness, Attachment Theory, Systemic Theory and Existential. I consider myself a trauma informed practitioner.

Practice description

I usually use software called Zoom to connect online. I will send you a meeting invitation prior to each supervision session by encrypted email. If you need support setting up Zoom on your device then I am happy to help you as much as I can.

I use Doxy.Me as an alternative to Zoom. This platform is designed for healthcare professionals, is secure and is fully encrypted. It does not require you to download any software on to your device.

If you are reluctant to use Zoom or Doxy.Me then I am willing to discuss using an alternative software platform of your choice, though I may refuse to use it if I am not comfortable that its privacy settings are appropriate for therapeutic work.

When meeting for online supervision it is important to have a place where you will not be overheard and ideally where you won’t be interrupted. You will need to have strong Internet and telephone connection.

I supervise therapists and other professionals based across the UK as well as in a number of other countries too. If you are based outside the UK then please contact me to discuss whether we can work together (with due regard for the relevant law in our respective countries).

As well as being BACP accredited, I am also a Professional Member of the Association for Counselling and Therapy Online (ACTO). I am committed to ethical practice and supervise with reference to the BACP’s Ethical Framework and ACTO’s Code of Ethics. When considering ethical dilemmas, I share my thinking and the basis for it with you, and encourage discussion.

My first session

I offer a free 30-minute initial conversation to talk through what your needs are from supervision at the moment, to ask me any questions you have about my practice and consider whether we might work well together.

If we agree that supervision sessions together are both do-able and likely to be helpful, then I will email you an assessment form to complete and return by email, along with a copy of my standard supervision agreement and privacy statement for you to read. We will agree a time/day for a one-off assessment appointment, usually held by online video. This assessment appointment lasts for up to 60 minutes and is charged at my standard rate (£50). The assessment appointment involves discussing one or two aspects of your work in more depth to trial how it feels for us both to work together. From this we can make a more informed judgment about whether we want to go ahead and meet on a regular basis.
