About me and my therapy practice

I have counselled people of all ages (6-85) in schools, universities and community organisations for over ten years. I now offer private counselling sessions to both children and adults both face to face and online. I am fully qualified as an online therapist, offering therapy via a range of platforms including video, instant messaging and email exchange.

Counselling aims to help a person clarify difficult feelings, get to know and accept themselves better, think about the choices they have and consider any changes they might want to make in their lives. I am an Integrative therapist which means that I incorporate a range of counselling theories in to my work and adapt my style to best meet the needs of each person.

I listen to what you say and pick out the key themes which emerge in order to clarify for you what is going on for you at the moment. People often feel relieved by this process and you may find that this is all you need.

However, some people may want to know how their attitudes, thoughts and feelings interlink and where they originate from in order to understand themselves better. If this is the case then I can help you to think more deeply about how your beliefs have come to be formed and how they are affecting you now.

You may want to go on to think about changes you would like to make in your life. These could be changes to your way of looking at yourself and at the world, at your past and at your future, or they could be practical changes to your daily life. You could choose to talk with me about what changes you would like to make and together we can think through a plan for how these changes could be made, and embedded, so that they stay with you after the counselling sessions have finished.

There is more information about how I work on my website, including how I work with children and younger people. To book an appointment please contact me confidentially by telephone or through the contact form on this site. I aim to reply to enquiries within 48 hours.

Please note that at present, due to the situation surrounding Covid 19, I am not offering face to face appointments until further notice. However, I am offering counselling and psychotherapy sessions online (including video, audio, instant messaging) and by telephone to children aged 12 years and older, and adults.

My first session

You can contact me to arrange an initial discussion of up to 30 minutes. This can be conducted through Instant Messenger, Telephone, Online Audio or Video. In this conversation we will consider together what is prompting you to seek counselling at the moment and whether my style of counselling is likely to be helpful for you. The conversation is free of charge.

If we agree that counselling sessions with me are likely to be helpful, then I will email you an Assessment Form to complete and return, and arrange a time/day for a one-off Assessment appointment with you using the technology which you would like to use for your counselling sessions. This Assessment appointment lasts for up to 60 minutes and is charged for. The Assessment appointment involves discussing your situation in depth, and considering what you would like to gain from counselling sessions. It is also an opportunity for you to assess if you think I am the right counsellor to work with you.

If we agree to continue to work together then I will send you a Counselling Agreement and a Privacy Statement by email for you to read and sign electronically. The terms of these include those found on the Terms of Use and Privacy pages of my website. Once the paperwork is completed, we will agree when to meet for regular counselling sessions. These can be scheduled to suit you and can either be at the same time/day on a regular basis, or can be scheduled as and when needed.

About me and my therapy practice

I have supervised therapists since 2013 and have worked with over 50 practitioners to date. These have included qualified and trainee therapists, from a variety of therapeutic orientations, and working in a variety of settings with different client groups.

My supervisory model is a blend of Shohet and Hawkins’ 7 eyed model combined with aspects of Page and Wosket’s cyclical model. I value a supportive relationship with each supervisee founded on the core person-centred principles of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard. Past supervisees have described me as supportive, warm and approachable.

I supervise with reference to the BACP Ethical Framework (2018) and applicable UK law. I aim to be transparent in this process, sharing my thinking and the basis for it with supervisees, and encouraging discussion. I try to promote a spirit of joint enquiry to ethical decision-making which I believe encourages supervisees to develop their understanding of how to use the Ethical Framework and knowledge of UK law, as well as how to use supervision, in order to weigh up ethical dilemmas.

I support supervisees’ development as therapeutic professionals by signposting to a range of learning resources in response to the specific client work supervisees are presenting (including reading, online CPD, face-to-face workshops).

As a humanistic integrative practitioner I incorporate theory from a number of therapeutic modalities into my thinking. I work creatively with some clients (e.g. sand tray, art work, puppets) and enjoy using creative materials and exercises when appropriate to enrich supervisory work.

Practice description

My dedicated therapy office is based in central Hull, United Kingdom. However, please note that I am currently not seeing people for face to face therapeutic sessions until further notice because of the situation relating to Covid 19. I am seeing supervisees for telephone and online sessions (video/audio call). I am accepting new supervisees for telephone and online appointments and will be pleased to hear from you if you decide to contact me.

I offer individual and group supervision to therapists, both those in training and those who are qualified. I supervise therapists working with children as well as with adults. I am a BACP Accredited member and supervise in accordance with the BACP's Ethical Framework. I am also a Registered Member of the Association for Counselling & Therapy Online (ACTO).

I offer supervision sessions by telephone and online (online audio and online video call) to qualified therapists and health professionals working worldwide with the exception of people based in the USA and Canada.

For online sessions I usually use software called Zoom to connect. This software platform encrypts all data sent in transmission and does not require you to become a ‘contact’ with me, which helps to protect your confidentiality. You will need to download Zoom software to the device which you are going to use to connect to sessions; you will be prompted to set up an account but you can choose not to do this and still attend the session. I will send you a Zoom meeting invitation prior to each supervision session by encrypted email. If you need support setting up Zoom on your device then I am happy to help you as much as I can. If you are reluctant to use Zoom for any reason then I am willing to discuss using an alternative software platform of your choice, though I may refuse to use it if I am not comfortable that its privacy settings are appropriate for therapeutic work.
