About me and my therapy practice

I'm not a silent, 'inscrutable' kind of counsellor. I'm ready to give opinions and advice if you ask for them and to answer questions about myself and my own life experience. We can work together on solutions and strategies.

Counselling is above all else an experience of being held, understood and listened to that is rare to find anywhere else and it is often this that makes the difference. It is about relationship. You need to feel safe and okay with me before we start on any sort of therapeutic journey together. I've been in therapy myself. I know what it feels like. I know it can be scary and daunting to get started.  I have some ideas by now of what works and what doesn't, what's helpful and what isn't.  Do come and find out.

Practice description

I work from home in Ovingdean, a couple of miles east of Brighton City Centre. The setting here is quiet, semi-rural and the accommodation is comfortable and private.

On the technical side, I am fully qualified and accredited to work with individuals, couples and family groups. I have a very wide experience over many years and I have particular experience in work with relationships, family issues, sexual identity, loss and bereavement, spirituality and with issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community.

There's easy parking nearby. Coming by bus involves a 15 minute walk from the A259 coast road or from Falmer Road (frequent buses) or else a bit of planning to use the hourly number 52 Big Lemon bus that actually comes into the village.  There is secure cycle parking.

My first session

The first session is where we find out about each other and decide if we're happy to continue to work together. I used not to charge for this first meeting but have found that in practice a lot of therapeutic work does take place even if we end up deciding not do further work so I do now charge at my normal rate. First sessions last at least an hour. Sometimes a longer first session is helpful, particularly with couples and families.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced and qualified supervisor and am very happy to work with therapists at any stage of their career from trainee/student to long-term experienced/qualified. My background and trainings are humanistic, person-centred and systemic. I supervise individual, couples and family therapists.

I see my essential role as a supervisor to bring fresh perspectives, ideas and viewpoints and as a balance between supporting and challenging.
