About me and my therapy practice
I first trained as a counsellor 20 years ago and have experience of supporting people through all sorts of difficulties. I now work as an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist with a special interest in Autism and Aspergers. I work in private practice and as a counsellor with Understanding Autism North West.
In working with problems including depression, anxiety and low self-esteem, I am particularly keen to provide a safe space in which my clients can explore long held feelings of being ‘different’, of being tolerated but not fully accepted, of feeling dissatisfied, disappointed and exhausted by the effort required in trying to continuously please others.
It is usually a relief to realise you are not alone in feeling like this and that it is possible to find your preferred way of being in the world and to decide to stop feeling the need to justify being your authentic self.
Unfortunately, it is often the case that autistic adults have had a particularly poor experience of counselling and psychotherapy where the professional has not had sufficient understanding of the ways in which the world looks so very different to their autistic client. I have a particular interest in supporting adults who find they are struggling to come to terms with what it means to be autistic and the support I offer is very different to that which my clients tell me they have experienced elsewhere.
I work face to face in a comfortable, purpose designed office adjoining my home, with easy off road parking , refreshments and toilet facilities.
I also work over the phone and through Zoom where travel to my office is not possible. I work this way with people all across the UK and have many years experience working effectively over the phone.
My first session
I understand the anxiety people have in acknowledging they may need the help of a professional and in making that initial contact, but I have many years of experience and promise there is no need to feel this way.
I'm very happy to have an informal chat if you would like to know more about how I may be able to help. Please get in touch (email, text or phone) to arrange a free initial 30 minute, no obligation telephone consultation. From here, we can look at a range of options, including short term counselling to longer term psychotherapy.
