About me and my therapy practice

I have over eleven years' experience of working psychodynamically with adults with a wide range of issues from low-mood and anxiety to relationship difficulties. Many people are feeling the impact of global events such as the pandemic, structural oppression and eco anxiety. It may be that you are curious to deepen your understanding of aspects of your identity, perhaps in relation to gender, race, sexuality or culture. Perhaps you are aware of unresolved loss or grief you wish to be supported in working through. My time as a bereavement counsellor reflects my interest in giving meaning and space to the complexities and nuance intrinsic to the experience of loss.

I hope that working therapeutically together, we could create a safe and reflective space in which to better understand your difficulties and resolve painful experiences and patterns. This engagement with the emotional world can lead to acceptance, healing and growth on a profound level.

In general, I offer therapy that is long-term and open-ended. My private practice is hybrid in nature; I offer in-person, phone-based and online therapeutic support and space.

Prior to psychotherapy, I was a psychiatric social worker within the NHS, supporting adults with severe and enduring mental health problems. Worthwhile in its own right, this time also strengthened my commitment to the value of 'talking therapies' in the alleviation of disruptions to good emotional and mental health.

Should you feel ready to deepen your healing, self-awareness and compassion, I look forward to hearing from you.

Practice description

I generally begin with a phone call, during which I would invite you to share what has prompted you to seek therapeutic support at this point in your life. If we agree it might be helpful to meet for an initial consultation, we would arrange this when we speak. This exploratory session allows you to share what feels most relevant in your life, both current and past.

This space also gives us both the opportunity to consider whether we could work together. If I don't feel my approach is best suited to your needs, I may be able to recommend other individuals or agencies. My work is directly influenced by my psychodynamic training and the value of considering unconscious processes.

Increasingly, I am influenced by attachment theory, mindfulness and trauma-informed practice. I also seek, where it feels of therapeutic value, to consider embodied and somatic understandings of trauma and emotional pain. This means, as well as exploring the unconscious through feelings and thoughts, there is also opportunity to consider the body's way of holding and expressing our interiority of feeling and psychological experience.

My first session

The first session can often feel like a continuation of the initial consultation process. I give time and space for you to settle into the session and for us to become familiar with sharing therapeutic space. As my way of working is open-ended and long-term, it can take time for deeper meanings and understandings to unfold an emerge.
