About me and my therapy practice
Most of us go through times in our life when we need support. That is where I come in as a person-centred counsellor. Sometimes we are lonely, suffering from anxiety or depression and believe that we are alone with our troubles and that things will never change. It is useful to have someone to share our thoughts and feelings with who can support us and help us to understand why we feel as we do and ultimately alter those feeling to more positive ones. Counselling is there for everyone; young and old, men and women. It is my job to help you through the minefield of life and to help you to make the changes that you need or want to make. I believe that we all have the answers to our own questions within us and it is my job to help you recognise those answers and enable you to move forward, positively. If you are having marriage or relationship issues, or feel that you would benefit from couples counselling, I am able to offer support in these areas. Many of my clients have low self esteem or lack self confidence and benefit from understanding and introduction to assertiveness, which enables them to feel more in control of their lives and more able to deal with confrontation. I offer assertiveness training as part of on going counselling for clients who may benefit from this. Whilst counselling is often about change and development, it can also be a place to put things into perspective, to find alternative ways of looking at life and to come to terms with the things which we have no power over, this may include bereavement, loss, relationship breakdown, serious or life changing illness and many more.
I qualified 14 yrs ago and have run a successful private counselling practice ever since. My previous work life was as a production manager in the theatre industry where I managed staff and budgets; I live very much in 'the real world' and am open and honest with everyone, including clients.
At this confusing time of worry and anxiety in the world, some people may need a little ( or a lot) more support than usual. I am available for telephone and online counselling. No need to leave your home. Appointments are available throughout the day and evening. I am also available for face to face counselling sessions from my Alsager base and hope to open face to face sessions in Congleton very soon.
Often it is good to talk to someone who is not a friend or family member. We can be more honest and don't feel that we are putting our problems onto those we love.
You will be offered a safe, confidential, understanding and non judgemental space in which to achieve this. I work from home in Congleton and from IQ Therapies in Alsager.
Counselling is always a challenge, but I hope that I can offer the kind of support which enables you to feel accepted and ultimately leads you to feeling more positive about yourself and your life and thus able to make whatever changes you wish, or feel you need, to make.
My first session
Whether you are on line, telephone or face to face, sessions will last for 1hr. I will always give you chance at the end of the session to ask about anything you are not sure of and make next appointments. I will begin our first session telling you about how I work and discussing the working contract which we both will sign up to. I will give you a written copy of this contract to take away with you; it is a simple description of how often we will meet, my pricing and location and also details of confidentiality. I will ask you if you have ever had counselling before, in order to work out how much experience and knowledge you may already have of counselling. Once you are comfortable with me, with your new counselling environment and with all that I have explained I will go on to ask you what brought you here and the rest of the session is yours to talk about whatever issues are uppermost in your mind. I will not 'force' you to talk about anything but I am open to you telling me anything and will not judge of criticise. You will not have to commit or pay for a series of sessions, though I do suggest that 6 sessions is a useful number to consider coming for.
Payment will be taken on the day ( at the end of the session) or may be requested in advance if we are meeting on line or via telephone. I accept cash or bank transfer.
