About me and my therapy practice

COVID 19 Update: In light of  restrictions around social distancing and self isolating, I am available now for an initial consultation and ongoing therapy sessions by telephone or via Skype/Zoom.

Seeking therapy can be one of the most positive steps we ever take. Talking through what troubles us in a calm, safe and supportive space can be the beginning of a new understanding of ourselves.

You may be seeking therapy following a significant life event or change you are struggling to reorganise yourself around. You may feel stuck in negative patterns of behaving and relating that you do not seem able to change. You may have become aware of events in the past that you have been unable to let go of and that are preventing you from moving forward. It may be that you are just not feeling your optimum self and wonder what this might relate to.

Whatever the reason that is making you think about therapy, finding a therapist you feel comfortable working with can seem daunting .

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist I believe that we all have the contents to become our fulfilled selves and that early childhood experience can often continue to effect how we see things as an adult. Negative patterns of relating can get set up for us in childhood which we continue to repeat into adult life, often unconsciously.

By meeting weekly with a trained professional to explore and understand this, over time we can develop the capacity to relate to our personal experiences, memories, feelings, beliefs and relationships in a more reflective yet active way, leading to greater awareness, self-acceptance and the possibility of positive and lasting change.

My first session

As a beginning, I usually suggest meeting for an initial consultation where you can tell me about yourself, why you may be seeking therapy and we can begin to think together about your therapeutic needs.

Lasting around 1 hour, it is also an opportunity for you to get a sense as to whether you would feel comfortable working with me going forward.

I usually suggest an open-ended therapy arrangement where you can come for as long as you feel you need to and which allows time and space for issues to unfold and to be worked on in depth.

I also offer time limited arrangements , usually over 12 sessions which are helpful if you would like to work with a focus on a specific issue or where perhaps there are practical reasons why you cannot commit to open-ended work.
