About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Mike! I value authenticity and transparency in the therapy room. I became a therapist to empower you to make positive and lasting change. I'll be honest, I won't have all the answers, but I'm never afraid to accompany you on the journey to find them.

In my practice, I am a compassionate and knowledgeable integrative psychotherapist who has worked in health care organizations for over 10 years. I mainly specialize in the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and third wave therapy approaches for a range of mental health difficulties including anxiety, depression, specific phobias, OCD and health anxiety.

To support my ongoing professional development as a practitioner I have completed the following training:

  • Bachelors Degree in Psychology & Counselling
  • Masters Degree in Health Psychology
  • Master Practitioner Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Certificate in Acceptance & Committment Therapy
  • Certificate in Compassion Focused Therapy

Throughout my 10 years experience of working in healthcare I have held several positions in private practice and mental health consultancy organizations including:

  • Senior Healthcare Assistant
  • Integrative Psychotherapist
  • Director of Therapeutic Services
  • Senior Psychological Research Associate
  • Integrative Psychological Therapist

Practice description

I stand by my organisations statement ‘Always Authentic, Always Therapeutic’. After speaking with so many clients over the years, it was disheartening to hear that people were not involved in their own care and were frequently met with practitioners who were not experienced in providing the level of psychological support they expected.

Within my practice, I place authenticity and honesty as my main priority. Throughout my career, I have received ongoing and advanced training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Health Psychology which allows me to provide an individual and effective treatment. In addition, I aim to always be transparent in the treatment I am providing, the steps that we will take and the likely outcomes you can expect to see.

I believe in facilitating positive change, with you at the centre of care

My first session

The Introduction

The first step of your therapy journey is the introduction. Before diving into the therapy session, we like to take a few moments for you to get to know me…and for me to get to know you.

The Legal 'Bits'

As therapists, we have to make sure that we can create a positive and safe relationship. During your first session, we will discuss how we maintain confidentiality and the boundaries of what you can expect from your therapist.

What brings you in today?

After we’ve taken you through the legal information, we will come to the most important part. “What brings you to the session today”. Now there are no specific guidelines on what you should or need to share with your therapist whatsoever. However we often, explore when your difficulties first started, the underlying reasons this may be happening and seek to understand how your thoughts, emotions, behaviours and physical feelings are connected.

Throughout therapy I want you to make progress towards your goals. After understanding what your goals are, we will work through a ‘formulation’ together. A formulation is something that we use to piece together your challenges and understand why the have initiated.

After gaining a thorough understanding of the factors affecting your well-being, you may be provided with a development task. Within CBT, development tasks are often given at the end of sessions. This serves as ‘homework’ for you to complete in between sessions. We provide this to help develop your skills and allow you to gradually become your own therapist.

The Ending

Before ending your first therapy session, we will often check in with how you found the session. This is a chance for you to share your feedback and ask any questions about the coming sessions. If you like, we can schedule your next session, then you are free to enjoy the rest of your day.
