About me and my therapy practice

I qualified as a Counsellor in 2002 and have worked in private practice 9 years. I've worked at Oxford University & Oxford Brookes counselling services, as a GP counsellor within the NHS , & in various Women's charity settings over the years.  I completed my postgraduate Psychodynamic Practice training at Oxford University & have been a registered & Accredited member of BACP since 2014. I trained as an Occupational Therapist originally, qualifying in 1997, & have 15 years experience in the NHS, specialising in Mental Health & LD community teams.

My core approach is psychodynamic which means exploring and thinking about how the past may be affecting the present. My aim is to get to the roots of ongoing issues, to try to make sense of them and work through the feelings involved. Through the therapeutic relationship you can be helped to come to terms with conflicts and difficulties, discover new insights, and increase your understanding, self acceptance and life satisfaction. You may be experiencing pain or a crisis or have felt stuck, anxious or depressed for some time. You may have past or present relationship issues that you need to talk about and explore. You may be struggling with addictive behaviours which are affecting other aspects of your life.

I currently work with adults of working age & students or young people (over 16). I offer short term counselling or longer term psychotherapy, up to twice weekly, with individuals and groups. I aim to balance support and challenge in a way that helps you move forward with your life.

Practice description

During the COVID 19 pandemic I am working entirely from home via Zoom or Skype or telephone.

I am based in the Southside of Edinburgh, and usually work face to face.

I am open to seeing individuals from other geographical locations via Online work going forward, including ex clients from Oxford.

My first session

In the first session there may be more questions than a normal counselling or therapy session, as I will be needing to gather certain information about you in order to decide if I can help you and if we can work together well going forward. Otherwise the first session is an opportunity for you to tell me about yourself and why you are seeking help now. You will also get a sense of who I am and how we might relate with each other going forward.

It's useful to have your GP and medication details to hand for the first session.

Initial Consultations need to be paid for via bank transfer on the same day.

About me and my therapy practice

I've been a member of BACP since 2001 and have been registered and accredited for some years now. My background is primarily in Health and I have 15 years experience in the NHS as a State Registered Occupational Therapist, specialising in Mental Health & Learning Disabilities, mostly in Community teams.

I've worked as a counsellor in various health, education and charity settings. I have a wide range of professional and clinical experience in the public, private and charity sectors, and have worked with a diverse range of people from different cultural, religious, & socioeconomic backgrounds. I can work with clients Briefly i.e. a 4-6 session model, and have done this for many years as a counsellor in GP practice, with Students at Oxford University Counselling Service, and at Oxford Brookes Counselling Service.

My preferred way of working in private practice is open ended/longer term psychotherapy. When I have the opportunity I also enjoy working in Psychodynamic Groups, and I have a Foundation training with the Institute of Group Analysis. I usually see individual clients once weekly, but also offer twice weekly where appropriate.

I have my own regular Supervision and peer support, and keep up to date with regular CPD activities. I have experience of supervising junior therapists.

Practice description

I have a background in the NHS so understand and know CBT well, however my Counselling training was Integrative (2002) and then Psychodynamic (2005-2009). The frame I use is in the main psychodynamic/Object Relations, and I can help you to think about your clinical work, as well as looking at what areas you may want to strengthen in your professional role, or opportunities for further CPD you might want to explore.

My first session

I am happy to speak on the phone before meeting for the first time, to discuss you needs and what you might want from your supervision. It is important that we can build a good working alliance together, and I would look to be putting in a review session once we've contracted, so that we can evaluate together how we well things are working.
