About me and my therapy practice

I offer one to one therapy sessions where you can safely explore your inner thoughts, feelings and experiences with a well trained and highly empathic counsellor.

There are many reasons for seeking out counselling or support with your mental health. Maybe you have experienced a life changing event or are processing the loss of someone or something very important to you. It could be that you want to work with an experience from your past or anticipate a change coming in your future that you wish to be fully prepared for.

Sometimes people need support for something less tangible, possibly a sense that something isn't quite right with the way they are experiencing life, maybe struggling with low mood or anxiety, maybe struggling with difficult decisions or the way that the relationships around them don't seem to quite make sense.

I am an Integrative Counsellor which means that I work with a broad set of tools and techniques that I brings to my work rather than following one theoretical standpoint. I am trained to a MSc level in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and have a background as a physiotherapist and in human science, so am committed to working with theories and tools that have a strong evidence base.

These include: Person Centred Theory; Attachment Theory; Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); Compassionate Focussed Therapy (Advanced Training with Paul Gilbert); Body Psychotherapy for Trauma (Full Year Training with Babette Rothschild)

I also have an Advanced Certificate in Couples Therapy and am currently training as a Supervisor (please get in touch for low cost supervision).

Practice description

I am no longer able to see clients face to face in the local area but am available to provide therapy via Video Call on Zoom; Telephone call on Signal and Email via Proton Mail.

These are all recommended platforms for the most secure confidential counselling outside of the counselling room.

There is a strong evidence base for the efficacy of on-line counselling where the correct training has been in place.

I am not only trained as an online therapist, but am also currently training to be a Supervisor of on-line counselling practice which will give me an ACTO Level 2 membership.

My first session

The first session is about us starting to build the relationship on which our work will be based.

I will want to understand how you are hoping that life will be better from coming to see me and will set some goals or intentions with you accordingly. We will agree to work together either in an open ended or a shorter, fixed term way. We will make a contract together on how we work and explore how you might want to experience the relationship between us.

I will explain to you how the process works, some of the theoretical standpoints I might use and help to answer any questions that you might have. I often provide handouts and guidance notes to clients that help you to continue the work that you do on yourself outside of our sessions.

My aim would be for you to leave the first session feeling hopeful and curious. Maybe also relieved to be starting to work on an element of your life that has become a burden to you. I appreciate that it usually takes a lot of courage to reach out and ask for help and will fully respect your courage and boundaries in doing so.
