About me and my therapy practice
Currently offering online and telephone counselling due to COVID-19. I offer a confidential, sensitive, caring therapeutic space to examine and find healing from the difficulties that arise in life, be that loss, depression, anxiety, stress, difficult life events, chronic pain/illness, mental health issues, relationship issues, childhood events such as divorce, issues of identity and search for meaning.
I am a qualified person-centred therapist with experience in bereavement including complex bereavements such as suicide, unexpected loss, and multiple bereavements. Feedback from clients shows that they appreciate my gentle and compassionate approach. Working from the person-centred model means that I will support your own healing journey rather than advise or analyse you.
Person-centred counselling is based on the belief that we all have an innate capacity for healing and that when we are struggling with life’s challenges a skilled, caring and facilitative counselling relationship can support us in this.
I am interested in the potential for growth during life’s toughest challenges. I also resonate with the challenges of overcoming childhood issues such as low self-esteem, lack of confidence and negative self-image, challenging core beliefs that we are not worthy, and developing our own skills of self-compassion and new ways of caring for the self.
I offer short and long term therapy online, via telephone and in various locations: Carlisle, Brigham, west Cumbria, and soon in Edinburgh. I am flexible around how often, and how long you would like to come for counselling, I also welcome returning clients. Sessions usually last an hour, although if you have a special requirement I may be able to be flexible. I also offer walk and talk therapy outside in a variety of locations.
I am LGBTQIA, kink and polyamory friendly – I am expanding this area of my knowledge base so I am not expert in all those areas however I want you to know that I take a positive and affirming view of diverse sexualities, genders and relationships and you will not be judged for these.
As well as being suitably qualified a counsellor needs to be the right ‘fit’ for you so you can feel safe enough to open up. I know how important this is so if my profile appeals then please get in touch. I am happy to answer any questions you may have either about person-centred counselling generally or what I can offer.
I am continually expanding my knowledge base both for personal growth and to deepen my practice. Some areas that resonate with me are self-compassion, holistic health, eastern philosophy/spirituality, mindfulness, intuitive eating/HAES, body image work, women's empowerment, the mind/ body connection, connection to nature, and somatic/embodied practices.
As well as my qualification I draw on my own life experiences in order to deepen the understanding I can offer my clients, in particular losing a family member to suicide and living with chronic health conditions.
My first session
Your first session with me will be a chance for you to begin to talk about the issues that are bringing you to counselling and receive support, and also ask me anything you need to know about the therapy offer. There is some minimal paperwork at the beginning which takes about 10 minutes. I will then begin the process of listening to your story, to understand your unique experiences and learn how I can best support you. I do my best to make sure you feel safe and supported so you can feel comfortable to share your personal information. You don't have to talk about anything that you don't want to. Particularly in first sessions you may need to get used to me and find out whether you feel safe to share sensitive issues, and I respect this. I offer a combination of deep supportive listening and therapy, as well as giving you information that might support your wellbeing such as advice around mental health.
