About me and my therapy practice

I've been a therapist for 13 years and I'm a mum of two very young children so the trials, paradoxes, and joys of pregnancy and motherhood are still fresh in my mind.

Initially I trained as a Play Therapist.  Play Therapy is mainly used with children but the playful and creative techniques can also be applied to therapeutic work with adults. For the last six years as well as holding a clinical role I have also been a manager and area manager for a charity that provides school based counselling services in schools.  My work has always involved lots of interaction and support for children’s families in all their different shapes and sizes.

I would describe myself as an integrative counsellor. This means I draw from a number of theories in my work. For me Person Centred Counselling and Psychodynamic Therapy are my two main go tos.

I’m not here to tell you what to do, but to hold you as you explore your feelings, think about where they may stem from, and support you as you decide how you want to move forward.

Practice description

Are you worried that you won't be a good enough mum? Concerned about how you will cope with another child? Is pregnancy or motherhood making you feel anxious and/or depressed, creating intrusive thoughts? Do you feel disconnected from your baby? Do you feel that you have lost more than you have gained?  It is meant to be one of the most joyful times of a woman's life but many women find being pregnant or being a mum can throw them into a mix of depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts or rage; even when they have no history of mental illness. The expectation of motherhood as one of the happiest times of your life may be making you feel ashamed to let anyone know how you really feel.  Becoming a parent can often bring up difficult thoughts and feelings about your own experience of being parented. You may be wondering how you can parent your child differently, or live up to the differing and/or high expectations of others or yourself?  Maybe you have been struggling with these feelings for years.  Mothership Counselling Services is here for women at all stages of motherhood. From those on the journey to becoming a mum through to those who have been a mum for a number of years. Counselling can be an effective way of helping you become the woman and the mother you want to be by: providing relief as you share your thoughts and feelings in a safe space; helping you to understand the root cause of your feelings; creating a vision of how you can move forward; bringing back a sense of clarity and control; improving your relationships, especially with your baby or child(ren). As well as talking therapy I can also offer visualisation techniques to help you relax and feel in control. When we are able to meet face to face I can offer therapeutic work with sand or art materials if you feel that words are getting in the way. Currently all my sessions are online. My website is: www.mother-ship.co.uk

My first session

After your initial enquiry I will arrange an 15 minute free phone consultation with you. There is no obligation to take up sessions with me if you feel I'm not the right person for you.

Before we start counselling sessions we will have agreed on a contract, and you will be provided with my GDPR statement and safeguarding and complaints guidelines.

We will aim to have our session times on the same day and time, normally once a week. We will look to agree to a certain number of sessions with a review date to see if further sessions are needed.

All sessions will then be online and will last for 50 minutes.  Our counselling sessions will be your chance to talk about and explore what is troubling you. I am here to listen to you and help you to make sense of your feelings with the aim to help you feel relieved and confident to move forward.

Particularly at this time you might be at home with your baby(ies) and/or child(ren).  I would recommend that child care arrangements are made so you can make the most of your time in sessions, and to allow yourself some undivided attention.

About me and my therapy practice

For the last 13 years I have been working therapeutically with children and families. My journey as a therapist started when I trained as a Play Therapist. For the last 6 years I have worked as a manager and area manager across Scotland for an organisation that delivers school based counselling. In the last 6 years I have been delivering clinical supervision on a weekly basis. In 2019 I was awarded the COSCA Certificate in Clinical Supervision with a pass mark of 87.5%.

I would describe myself as an integrative/trans-theroretical  therapist and supervisor. I draw from a number of theories in my work. For me Person Centred Counselling and Psychodynamic Therapy are my two main go tos.
I feel that this works well as the relationships between the child and family members are well supported by psychodynamic thinking and person centered practice.

Prior to my work as a therapist I worked extensively in education and social work fields; often in multi-disciplinary teams and in supportive roles. I believe that this adds to the quality of supervision I can offer as I am often able to have a good understanding of the children and familes you may be working with. In my management roles particularly I dealt with numerous safeguarding and child protection concerns.

Practice description

I offer specalised clinical supervision to anyone working therapeutically with babies, children and/or families. I have an abundance of experience of working in an integrative manner using play therapy as my main tool when working with children and adolescents.

I have undertaken training in Filial Therapy (Gary Landreth CPRT), Family Therapy (Family Therapy Training Network), and recently in Infant Mental Health (University of Warwick IMHOL). As well as membership to BACP I am also a member of the Association of Infant Mental Health (AIMH).

I enjoy working with counselling and play therapy students right through to experienced therapists.

My private practice, Mothership Counselling Services (MCS), is focused on working with women during pregnancy, post-natally and beyond with any concerns, diffculties or mental health issues they are experiencing regarding themselves or their child(ren) due to pregnancy or the challenges of motherhood.
