About me and my therapy practice

I have been working in the field of mental health for nearly 14 years. Before that I had spent over ten years in various office jobs. I was never happy or settled though and I started an evening Psychology course at The University of Birmingham. This was the catalyst for a complete career change as I found the whole course so interesting.

I haven't looked back since.

I have a unique mix of knowledge, experience and skills that I have constantly added to and built upon over the years. Having worked in many different therapeutic environments for so long and learning so much about how different behaviours, issues, traumas, experiences can influence a person’s thoughts and feelings through that work, my therapy practice recognises the need to provide a very calm, safe and boundaried space to talk about and explore anything that affects your quality of life or your ability to enjoy your experience of life and the people in it.

I am a humanistic practitioner working with people flexibly and always with their needs at the forefront of any work we do. Every person is different and therefore needs flexible support and my experience in working in different environments, using different techniques and theories means I have worked successfully with many people with lots of different issues.

I have worked with clients experiencing issues such as self-harm, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, addictions, abuse, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, grief/loss and trauma. I have also worked in both private practice and residential settings with people who have been diagnosed with a personality disorder or dual diagnosis. I have worked in Birmingham, London, Lincoln, Liverpool, Chester, Thailand and I am now settled in Bromsgrove.

About me and my therapy practice

As an experienced therapist and supervisor, I will be able to help you on your professional journey. I have a certificate in supervision from an NCS accredited course and approaching 15 years of experience in the field of complex mental health.

As a supervisor I am able to offer or be:

• Supportive, so that you feel able to bring into the room the things you may find difficult or even be anxious or scared about. There are no stupid questions in supervision and it is important you feel safe to own when you may have done something in a session you are worried about

Accessible, I think it is important that a supervisor is available between appointments to check in or get advice and support around client work. Some things can’t wait, and I understand the importance of offering support out of regular hours and appointment times.

Collaborative, the learning and development goes both ways! I will help you learn through my experiences and also my library of books, but I also take and learn a lot from my experience of my supervisees. This again has to be at the heart of good supervision.

Challenge, sometimes it is important to accept and be challenged on aspects of our work. I commit to always challenging a supervisee when necessary, but also making sure it is done in a way that is not critical, or negative.

Knowledge, every supervisee is welcome to any aspect of my training, experience or CPD that I have gathered over the years, but I also hold that I do not know everything whenever I am supervising people. This for me is part of the journey and also part of the joy of what we do.

The supervisory relationship is so important and can have such a profound impact on our professional and personal life that I treat each supervisee as an individual and adapt myself to make sure I am the best I can be for them.
