If you are struggling with difficult feelings, some of which you may not understand, counselling and psychotherapy can help. As a psychodynamic counsellor I am able to help you explore your feelings and life experiences in a safe, non-judgemental way, to gain an understanding of the reasons behind your difficulties and begin to ease your levels of distress and discomfort. However, sometimes distressing events can leave us with unwelcome emotions or bodily sensations that are more difficult to ease, and on these occasions trauma therapy could help.
Trauma therapy can be used to ease the distressing effects of major events such as a car crash or assault, but it can also help with things which, although perhaps not initially thought of as traumatic, may leave us feeling confused, fearful, angry, anxious or depressed. Examples of such things could be - having been made fun of by those around us, feeling neglected or uncared for as a child, or not feeling heard in our relationships. Trauma therapy works well with almost anything which has felt distressing or disturbing to us, and I have found that combining it with talking in a trusting therapeutic relationship, is particularly effective in making long term positive changes to our lives.
There are many ways of working with the effects of trauma, and the methods I use are EMDR and Energy Psychotherapy. EMDR works to unblock distressing memories that have become 'stuck' during processing resulting in us being triggered by situations which perhaps unconsciously remind us of these memories. Energy Psychotherapy incorporates energy psychology methods (such as AIT, EFT & TAT) into psychotherapy and these methods work to remove disruptions in our energy system caused by distressing events. Both methods have a calming effect on our minds and bodies.
