About me and my therapy practice
I see my main task as a counsellor to be listening. I will always want to start by listening to your story, and to what has brought you to seek counselling. We can then decide between us where to take things from there.
I tend to think that what makes us who we are is usually a complicated mix of childhood and adult experiences, choices we make, and circumstances beyond our control. I will aim to use my training and experience to help you explore some of these things, but I will also want to learn about your understanding of where you are and where you want to be in future.
My training and orientation could be described as an integration of existential psychotherapy and Attachment Theory - I believe that understanding what makes us tick as human beings and as individuals can be incredibly liberating. I also have found that dealing with the world we find ourselves in and the range of feelings that it provokes can be incredibly difficult, and having someone to share this task without judgement can be incredibly helpful.
My work with children uses non-directive play therapy techniques, it is creative and engaging for the child, but also enables them to find a route towards growing emotionally and finding tools to deal with their difficulties. It is underpinned by my knowledge of attachment theory, along with a sense of playfulness and fun. Numerous studies have found non-directive play to be a highly effective modality in therapeutic work with children.
I work with children of all ages. I have worked with primary schools and with children's centres both as a counsellor and in other roles for the local authority, I have a enhanced DBS check available on request. I also have extensive experience with children in all stages of the care system.
