About me and my therapy practice
Do you ever feel like you’re alone, with no one to lean on for support? Do you feel overwhelmed by difficult or challenging life events and want help to feel like yourself again? Are you feeling lonely, isolated or struggling with the after-effects of lockdown restrictions and/or shielding?
Whether you'd like to address a specific issue, or pursue a longer journey of self-development, counselling can provide an opportunity to discuss and explore your situation in a safe, confidential environment.
I am a qualified Counsellor (BA Counselling and FdA Person-Centred Counselling) and a Registered Member of the BACP (MBACP). I have a wealth of experience of supporting people with various emotional and physical difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, academic pressure, work-related stress, intrusive thoughts, relationship issues and family issues. My area of expertise is supporting people with chronic or life-limiting illnesses, and those who have been bereaved or are preparing for a bereavement. Over the past 18 months, I have also gained considerable experience in supporting people classed as Clinically Extremely Vulnerable to Covid-19, and those who were required to shield during the pandemic.
As someone with lived-experience of chronic illness, I have a deep appreciation of the day-to-day difficulties of living with ill-health. Sometimes it can be difficult to feel that we have control over our lives, when our bodies or health feel so out of our control. The threat of contracting Covid-19, or the requirement to 'shield' during the pandemic may have brought about additional worries or concerns.
Within our sessions, we can work together to explore your experience, gain improved understanding, identify helpful techniques or coping strategies, and set and achieve your desired goals.
I believe that each client is the expert of their own world. Therefore, within our sessions, I won't tell you what to do or assume to solve your problems for you. Instead, I will work collaboratively with you to ensure that your needs and goals are at the heart of our sessions.
As an Integrative Counsellor, I use skills and techniques from various models of counselling. This enables us to be flexible in the way that we approach your difficulties, and allows us to tailor our sessions to suit you.
I believe that everyone can benefit from a safe, non-judgemental, confidential space to discuss difficult or challenging life events. We do not need to be at or near to crisis to undertake therapy. Please note - due to Covid-19, all sessions are currently taking place online via Zoom/Teams/Google Meet, or telephone. I do not anticipate resuming face-to-face sessions for the foreseeable future. I appreciate that online or telephone sessions may not suit everyone. However, my clients and I have found them particularly effective over the past year. If you're unsure whether this option is for you, I'm happy to provide more information and/or guidance on how videoconferencing works.
My first session
Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other a little, and for you to decide if I feel the right fit for you and your needs.
Within this session I will provide information about how I work and what you can expect from our counselling sessions. I will ask you to share a little about what has brought you to pursue counselling, your current situation and history. We will also make a brief plan for how we will use our sessions and what you'd like to gain from them.
At the end of the session, if you'd like to continue to work with me, we will arrange a convenient time and date for our next session/s.
