About me and my therapy practice

Sometimes we just don’t know what is happening to us, how we feel, what we want from life, or how to deal with everything or anybody, “out there”.  It is all very confusing. I certainly have been in this position and counselling was suggested to me.  And, here I am – a counsellor or a “Wounded Healer” (as Yalom suggested “only the wounded healer can truly heal” (1997)).

Having experienced separation from parents, bullying at school, depression, feeling a failure as a mother owing to child birth experiences, being a forces wife during the Falklands War and all the emotions that entailed, I feel that I can offer a “something” to people which is unique.  This has been enhanced by my experiences as a midwife and nurse, as a Midwife Bereavement Counsellor, working in a hospice as a counsellor, as a young person’s counsellor in the sexual health context as well as in schools and with charities for young people.  All this experience and knowledge I bring and can offer to you as my client.

I will offer to you a safe place to explore whatever you bring to a session whatever “it” is, and we can look at “it” in whatever way you want. This means a session of counselling can involve, for example, general conversation, discussion of goals and strategies to achieve those goals, use of drawing or music (drumming) and voice, movement, or use of stories and imagery, and play.  Together we will immerse ourselves in “your world” joining together to find a way through whatever it is you need to do, or how to “be” for yourself.

I often use Focusing which highlights the need to ensure that we not only explore   how our minds “think” but also explore the “body felt sense” (ie how our actual body is experiencing what is going on for us, what it tells us of our past experiences and how this might influence our thinking patterns and feelings)(www.focusing.org. uk).

I have experience of using certain techniques which I am able to offer to a client during a session such as emotional freedom technique, relaxation or visualisation, focusing, basic hypnotherapy skills or the Rewind technique.  As a complementary therapist I can also offer you reflexology or Reiki treatments for those times when talking is just not working for you, and what you need from me is a “gentle touch” therapy which assists your own silent thought processes and offers you the chance to relax and “let go” of the stress of these thoughts, and those tense feelings in your body.

I work with children and young people as well as adults.  When working with children it is important to me that parents have a full understanding about the importance of confidentiality for their child within sessions whilst I have to be aware of the parental need for information about their child.  The initial session is set aside to ensure that I as counsellor together with the parent are working from the “same page” for the benefit of their child.

Sessions can be held not only in my room in Durham, Stockton, or Barnard Castle but at any place you find safe eg. Home (this can incur further cost depending upon distance from base).

As a trained and experienced supervisor of both student and qualified counsellors I can offer supervision in Durham, Stockton and Barnard Castle

About me and my therapy practice

Supervision for me is about being with the supervisee in such a way that they feel able to bring not just those difficulties that they have encountered in their work but also are able to bring those details about themselves and their own lives that impact on their work with clients. This is an essential component of my work with you as supervisee.

It is a collaborative experience where you and I join together in our exploration into whatever you might bring to a session no matter where this takes us.

I wish to be open minded to your own opinions, experiences and assumptions about the work you do whilst bringing to our sessions possibly an alternative viewpoint which hopefully will lead you to a better understanding of your work with clients.

I work from a humanistic perspective whilst acknowledging the tremendous value of other perspectives which influence how counsellors approach therapy.  I therefore am happy to work with and honour supervisees who practise in a different manner to myself.

Supervision continues to be a journey for me in which together the supervisee and I find and follow a route to the supervisee’s destination or goal for the session.  This means our journey can follow a variety of different pathways – it is the supervisee’s choice which route to take, and this we will follow.  I am mainly there to offer guidance and support in this journey. What I will offer to you is the experience I have gained through the years whilst working as a counsellor, nurse, midwife, mother, daughter and wife etc..

We can work in the best way for you whether this be creatively, (music, art, etc) or through words, or through whatever means is available to us.

I have for many years had experience of working with both student and qualified counsellors and feel really passionate about the necessity of regular supervision for all counsellors.  I have also had experience of working in group supervision and am always happy to lead groups of counsellors who do not have a facilitator at whatever venue the group choose.

Price: For 1.5 hours -£55.00.  (students – concessionary rate), for groups – price on application.
