About me and my therapy practice
Hi I'm Simon,
I work with people to help them come to terms with their problems. I know from first hand experience how beneficial talking to a trained professional can be for us when life is a struggle. How the experience of counselling and what we unearth during the work with our therapist can help us move on with our lives.
There is no magic approach to therapy, so I wanted to train as an 'integrative practitioner'. This means I have studied a range of therapies and depending on your unique set of circumstances, I will bring the parts I believe are most useful to you.
A little about me...I began working in HR and recruitment over fourteen years ago before starting the long journey towards becoming a registered counsellor and coach nearly five years ago.
I have a Level 7 Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Coaching and I gained practical experience working as a counsellor for Mind in Hackney and Waltham Forest.
During my working life before I entered the counselling profession, I had experienced some big personal challenges. At various points I felt I would benefit from professional support. So I know from my own experience how well counselling, therapy and coaching can work, and how it can help us find hope, gain resilience and help to foster a deeper understanding of ourselves.
My approach to my work is client centred and humanistic. What that means is that you are at the foundation of my practice and that you will be accepted as you are, with empathy and without judgement. A space created for you to be open with me and also open with yourself.
I also have coaching experience and qualifications to compliment my work as a therapist, so this means we have some options for how we work together. There is never a 'one size fits all'. Everything is unique and tailored as each of my clients are unique human beings with different needs and experiences.
My first session
In your first session, it will be about us getting to know each other. You will be able to tell me what's been going on for you, and how it's a problem for you. I'll ask some questions to make sure I understand you as well as possible, and you can ask me any questions that you have too.
It's really important you find a counsellor you feel comfortable with, someone you feel at ease with and someone you believe you can work effectively with.
You will sometimes hear these first sessions referred to as “assessments”, which is true, because I’ll be assessing your situation and how I can best help you; at the same time, you’ll be assessing me, to be sure I’m the right therapist for you. If you’ve got a lot to tell me, it may take longer than one session, and that’s ok, we can continue next time. We’ll talk about what you want from counselling so we can be sure we’re on the same page, and we’ll agree how we’re going to work together.
