About me and my therapy practice

Within a professional relationship with clear boundaries and maximum confidentiality, I provide a safe, respectful and non-judgmental environment for you to explore any issues you may be struggling with. I combine specific skills with extensive theoretical knowledge and intuition in order to help you explore these more deeply, the eventual aim of such deeper exploration being for you to find your own answers. Together we can identify anything which might be blocking you from doing this and find suitable ways in which you might address these blocks. I will not give advice or provide answers, although I may sometimes offer a different perspective or suggestions. I believe that people have the answers within, and my role is to help you mobilize and extend your resources and hopefully provide you with tools by which to become your own best therapist. I will combine support with sensitive challenge in order to help you do this.

My approach is integrative and heavily based on the person-centered approach pioneered by Carl Rogers. I prefer to fit theories around clients rather than vice versa. I therefore draw on a range of different models according to client needs. I often like to work with imagery, dreams, the body and creative approaches such as drawing, clay-modelling or writing as ways of accessing deeper-than-everyday levels of consciousness, and have a particular interest in the application of mindfulness as a way of learning to relate to emotions and thoughts in a more healthy way.

I qualified as an Embodied Therapy earlier this year with the Institute of Embodied Psychotherapy, and have a qualification in Interpersonal Therapy for Depression (IPT) gained through my NHS position in 2021. I believe that a "bottom up" approach using the body is can be a gateway to deeper levels of awareness which are often difficult to reach through cognitive work alone, and that the body is a much underestimated resource in the healing process.

Practice description

I work from 3 locations: the first being my home in  Pontypridd, where I have a dedicated room. My work is with individuals aged 18 and over, and I plan to begin training in couples counselling next year.

For those unable to attend, or uncomfortable attending, face to face appointments, I am also offering appointments by Zoom or telephone.

The second location is at 31 The Parade, Cardiff Cf24 3AD Currently this is on Wednesday afternoons only. The third location is at The Sanctum, Unit 12,  Poplar Road, Caerphilly CF83 .1LF All locations have COVID risk mitigation measures in place.

The Caerphilly location is wheelchair accessible. I may be able to offer this in Cardiff too.

The fee for remote counselling is the same as for a face-to-face session. For remote sessions I ask for payment by bank transfer in advance of the session.

In early 2022 I left a part time position as a senior primary care counsellor and Interpersonal Therapy for Depression (IPT) Practitioner in the NHS, with patients at GP surgeries experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues. I am now working only in private practice.

For a more detailed description of IPT, please see my website.

My areas of experience and interest include anxiety, depression, bereavement, relationship problems, emotional impact of physical health, abuse, self esteem, addictions, trauma and general  personal growth.

My first session

A first session is 60 minutes and is a chance for me to gain an overview of you and your problems and for us to agree on focal areas and/or goals for us to work towards,  as well as an opportunity for you to gain a feel for the way I work and to ask any questions. The first session costs £50.

If we decide at the end of this session to continue with counselling, we will agree on times and frequency of following sessions, and when to review how things are progressing. We will go over a written agreement which clarifies what you can expect from me, and what I expect from you in terms of commitment, cancellations, confidentiality and other practical matters.
