My counselling work takes place on Tuesdays to Thursdays daytime and evening.   I work face to face (Wirral), by video and by telephone.

About me and my therapy practice

Hello and thank you for reading my profile. I am a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) accredited counsellor and I adhere to their code of ethics.

I offer face to face, video or telephone counselling.  I use a secure, encrypted video system called which is recommended for therapy.

I have 30 years of counselling experience seeing people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. I use a range of approaches to suit such as psychodynamic, solution focused and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).  I have worked with a wide range of issues such as anxiety/panic, excessive stress levels, low mood/depression, loss and bereavement, relationship problems, low self-esteem, perfectionism and trauma/abuse.

I have particular expertise in working with trauma/abuse and I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprogramming (EMDR) to advanced level. Sounds a mouthful, but this is an internationally used technique with a very good evidence base. Evaluations show that it can have significant results in reducing the impact of recent or historical trauma.

I am a male counsellor which is less common and that may appeal to some people.

I am also a trained life coach. This looks more at identifying and planning ways of meeting goals such as improving confidence or assertiveness or refocusing your life. It is more about enhancement and less about problem reduction. Having said that it can work stand alone or woven into a counselling approach.

We can all experience life problems or get stuck. Counselling can help by having an objective, non -judgemental person who is outside of your day-to-day life.  As a counsellor I aim to provide space, understanding, support, experience and strategies to find positive ways forward.

Practice description

You will get an idea of my style of working from 'My first session' below.

I often suggest a fifteen minute video/phone call before a first session to 'break the ice', check that I have the right skill set to meet your needs and to answer any questions.

I am aware and curious about any social and psychological factors that may influence our work such as gender, age, culture and ethnicity.

My first session

I am curious about why now/are there specific triggers for you?   I am interested in any previous experience of counselling and what was helpful or less helpful so I can tune into that.   I often ask about any thoughts or feelings you have in anticipation of our first session (it is normal to feel a bit nervous!)

I want to get to know you and understand factors that have influenced your life. This helps my understanding and shapes my responses.   I will ask about family history, key relationships and significant life events.   Initially this is an overview, but we can return in more detail in subsequent sessions if this is important to you.   Equally I am guided my you if there are areas that you do not want to go into at the outset

Often clients have a clear sense of problems they want to reduce or manage more effectively.  This is a starting point, but it is also important to identify what you then want more of to make life more fulfilling.   Sometimes clients know what they want or need to talk about and sometimes not.  So in the latter case the focus of our sessions will be guided by your desired direction of change ("If our sessions were to have been as helpful as possible, what would have changed for you?")  My style is very interactive and I have a 'toolkit' based on many years of experience.  I do my best to tailor my approach to the needs of each individual.

I greatly value feedback at the end of a first and subsequent sessions to know we are on the right track.
