About me and my therapy practice
As a Counselling Psychologist, I work in an integrative way, using theories collaboratively with clients in order to achieve their goals for the therapy sessions. I can work short term with Solution Focused Therapy or take time to work through deep-seated or complex issues, as the client needs.
Meeting the client where they are, currently, is important in order to work therapeutically together.
Relationship issues, anxiety, stress, depression and trauma are issues that come up often in therapy. Whether the relationship issues are family, couples, or work-related, practical strategies are offered, to be used to start working effectively immediately, with whatever is presenting.
Trauma often underlies anxiety and depression so where appropriate, work around healing the trauma can be effective in enhancing overall well-being and better mental health.
My first session
During the first session, the client and I check in with each other whilst going through confidentiality, Informed Consent and the format that is usual for Counselling Sessions. At this stage, the appropriate Psychometric test or questionnaire is given, as it is helpful to give a base line as to how the client is feeling.
The presenting issue, impact on the client's life and goals of therapy are discussed and collaboratively agreed upon. After exploration of the client's experience and feelings, an assessment , is made and the changes are clarified that the client would like to make.
I cover the progression of the therapy, to advise that we check in that the desired progress is being made. Usually, general life experiences are discussed in the course of the sessions because the strategies can be practised in real-world, real-life situations.
I explain about the ending session which is really important, to once again revisit the Psychometric test used, to check progress and talk about sign-posting, and evaluate the sessions. It pulls together the learnings from the therapy and informs the future direction for the client.
