About me and my therapy practice
I am a BACP Accredited Counsellor with over 20 years experience. I was a Psychiatric Occupational Therapist, worked as a Drugs Counsellor and then trained at Relate and I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Couple Therapy.
I work in a truly collaborative way and always acknowledge your bravery in making the decision to have counselling as it is not the easy option. I see you as the expert and myself sitting alongside you with some expertise to share. I want to promote the concept of curiosity- being curious about ourselves and our relationships will help you to make sense of your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. I will look to increase your self worth, confidence and self esteem and help you to build resilience and do things to improve your wellbeing.

In these times the impact of COVID 19 on peoples mental health is unprecedented and many of you who have never experienced Anxiety or Depression are finding themselves struggling - PLEASE SEEK HELP and make contact with me- I am here to offer counselling, listen to your concerns and worries and I can offer you some strategies and coping mechanisms. I have put together an extensive list of resources and you can also pick up books, packs etc from my door step.
My other work is Couple Counselling - the two main areas that couples want help with is communication and how to manage conflict . I also offer pre-nuptual counselling, help and guidance when there has been an affair where its important to explore how to regain trust and helping couples to separate amicably .Often couples may want help with how to tell their children they are separating. I have put several packs together on conflict, intimacy, and have many resources in the way of books and activities as I want couples to get the most out of the process.
I work with Young People over 16 with issues around mental health, self harm and suicidal ideation . Young people may also come if they are struggling with relationships at home, bullying- physical or online, how to cope with their work at school college or university wanting strategies to deal with perfectionism or procrastination. If you just want a safe space to talk to someone who is not a friend or family and who is not going to judge you in any way please get in touch with me.
I offer Anger Management - we look at the triggers, any physical symptoms, how to make sure that your anger does not become hot rage, how long you have had problems with your anger and we we explore your past- how anger was expressed in your family. I use CBT as the main model. You will be given a pack that I have put together and some work to be done between sessions. It does involve a lot of committment to the process.
My first session
I always say that the first session is very much a fact finding excercise. I suggest before coming that clients think about what they want to get out of the counselling which helps me too as I can then help them to work towards this.
When it has all been presented to me I will then provide you with a plan- so what may need to be explored further, any modalities I will use but also explain that counselling is an evolving process so things may change . I will ask you whether you want to book a further session or if you want to go away and think about it - there is no pressure. It is important that you feel comfortable with me and the counselling space.
If you are happy to come back then we go through my counselling agreement and both sign it.
Currently, however, I am only working remotely so the counselling agreement is emailed to you and payment made by online banking. I am using Zoom, Skype , Google Meet, WhatsApp, Facetime or phone- the choice is yours. The sessions last 50 minutes and up to 50 minutes for young people.
