About me and my therapy practice

Counselling for Teachers

Hello, I'm Priya, an ex-teacher, mum and psychotherapist working with anxiety, depression and trauma. I'm passionate about supporting teacher mental health and that is why I am campaigning by asking government to provide free counselling for teachers within school time.

I understand the pressures of the job very well. As a member of SLT for some years too, I was aware of the additional responsibilities that were expected of me and the demands of my classroom role never seem to shrink either.

It's too easy to neglect our well-being because there is always more work to be done. The demands will always be there and an hour of counselling per week will help you cope better with the pressures you have.

Having someone to talk to who can understand how hard you work, how relentless the work can feel and how the countdown to the next holiday is always on, is incredibly helpful. I believe that children should be cared for by teachers who are cared for and that's why I would encourage you to get in touch and prioritise yourself.

Whatever you are are going through, I will do my best to listen, understand and appreciate your situation. I'll be patient, compassionate and non judgemental. Having a safe, confidential space to off-load and be heard with empathy is a game changer and that's one of the reasons counselling works.

Seeking support when you are not feeling your best takes courage. You deserve to have some help when you need it and no one should have to suffer alone. You don't need to prove how you feel to a counsellor, I'll believe you and do my best to help.

I believe happy, healthy teachers are the best educators for our children and future generations. The job is demanding and you work hard enough so give yourself permission to get help while you need it.

Practice description

Consultations are free and I can usually arrange them within a few days. They are a short phone call of around 15 minutes to help understand each other better. There's a chance to ask questions about me and the way I work. If you don't want to book in after a consultation, that's fine. It's important to find someone who you feel comfortable to talk to.

Some people choose not to have a consultation and book in for a session instead. This is a good way to see how a session with me feels and similarly, if you choose not to book in again, I will respect your decision. I want you to be confident in me and to be able to trust me, this is how effective therapy can take place.

Once sessions start, you can expect a phone call from me each week at our agreed time. We will talk for an hour* and we will go at your pace. There won't ever be any pressure or expectation. I'll ask for feedback regularly to see if the sessions are working for you and meeting your needs.

It will depend on many factors as to how many sessions you may need. There's no fixed number I work to, instead regular reviewing and discussion with you about how you are each week will help me gauge when you might be coming towards an end. I'll discuss this with you.

For some clients, I might suggest things to try between sessions. This is optional and again, there's no pressure. If you want additional support, I'm happy to help. 😃

*If you are seeking counselling for trauma, the sessions are a little longer at an hour and a quarter and priced a little higher as a result at £75. Issues I work with include PTSD and childhood abuse.

It's transformative to talk to someone about what's worrying you. Counselling changed my life for the better and I would love to help you too. Contact me some times you are available and we can go from there.

My first session

The best way for you to get in touch with me is via email or text. Let me know your availability and I will do my best to get back to you as soon as possible. Before we start, there will be some documents that outline the terms of our work together and give you all the information you need about payments, cancellations, etc.

During our first session, I'll complete an assessment for part of the session to identify the issues you are looking for help with, previous experience of counselling if any and how you might look after yourself if you were really struggling. I'll be looking to ensure you are safe and ready for therapy in order for you to get the maximum amount of help from our work. Some or all of this assessment may take place during the consultation which is free, so might be better value for money.

Depending on your situation, I might be able to offer a lower rate. I also understand if you would like term time only sessions. Let me know your requirements and I will do my best to accommodate you if I can.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me. If you want to know more about me before you get in touch, please visit my website where you can find links to my blog, videos and podcast. Finally, if you haven't signed yet, please do sign and share the petition asking for government investment in teacher mental health.

About me and my therapy practice

*Appointments currently available.

Burnout is real.

Anxiety is not a choice.

Depression is not a choice.

Trauma is real.

You can heal; you deserve it.

Hello, I’m Priya, a psychotherapist specialising in trauma and burnout, with special experience in the South Asian culture.

Being kind to others and not yourself is not okay in my book. Putting yourself first might be guilt inducing but it's probably necessary if you're considering counselling.

Therapy with me involves support, listening to you without judgement and quite a bit of cheerleading. I'll help you take the steps needed towards your self-worth becoming real and tangible instead of being ruled by self doubt and feelings of inadequacy or set by others/a job/a relationship.

You are valid.

You are important.

You matter.

If you're feeling alone, misunderstood by those around you and finding it exhausting to keep it all in, you can talk to me. Having a little help sometimes is needed and the courage required to seek support is something I celebrate every time someone gets in touch.

It can be daunting to choose a counsellor and nerve racking having a first session, which is why it is worth having a free consultation of around 15 minutes to see if you feel comfortable with me. There's no pressure to book in again.

I am a warm and friendly person and you'll soon find that you don’t need to prove, measure or compare how you feel to me. I'll listen, believe you, believe in you and support you fully.

Practice description

I work on the phone and will ring you at our agreed time each week. We will talk for up to 75 minutes. There will be space to explore any issues you would like support with and I'll ask you for feedback on how to help you best as we continue to work together.

I work in a relational way which means, I'd like to get to know you in order to best support you. I also will recommend tasks to do outside of sessions to further support your journey. This might include some learning. It will never be expected or checked up on though.

This is what I provide:

  • Counselling service for burnout in the helping professions including parents, teachers, nurses, doctors, social workers, etc.
  • Counselling for complex trauma including childhood abuse, early years difficulties, PTSD and CPTSD.
  • Counselling for anxiety, and depression including, post-natal issues.
  • Counselling which has been requested by the courts for individuals who are receiving support and intervention from a social worker.
  • Coaching for Headteachers/leadership. If you want increased confidence, better relationships with your team and improved results, get in touch. I know the types of leaders who get results and who are trusted by their staff.

Any questions, please ask.

My first session

Consultations are free and you're under no obligation to book a session afterwards. The first session is a 'getting to know you' one. I will ask about childhood experiences, school years, key relationships and major/life events. This will guide our work together. There's no pressure to answer anything, you choose how you want the session to go so long as you tell me what you need me to do.
