“I have been through counselling various times over the years, and no one has helped me as much as Johnnie did.” (JC IAPT client)

I have availability in person in Canterbury and also online remote availability.

Currently i have achieved excellent results with talk therapy combined with EMDR and ‘parts’ processing’ whereby, for example, anxiety can be addressed by relating to the part of you that requires you to feel anxious, or panicky or worthless.

I have a helpful NHS background in liaison psychiatry but i avoid ‘psychiatrising’ with ‘symptoms’. I believe that all parts of you are trying to help, protect and keep you safe.

These presentations are often linked to emotional abuse/neglect and trauma history. Often your body and nervous system goes into overdrive to protect itself, creating obsessions or constant worry or overcompensation.

If you have specific issues ie addiction, weight and eating issues, chronic fatigue, fybromyalgia, chronic pain, panic attacks, phobias - these issues can be quite focused and online work is often better to target specific parts of self.

About me and my therapy practice

I offer counselling and therapy in central Canterbury and online sessions are also available.

I have a gentle and empathic style of helping, and believe in simplicity but with focus and my commitment.

I have been an NHS crisis team manager and liaison psychiatry specialist so my practice is informed by evidence-based health care.

This is not about the ‘medical model’ but about valuing all parts of you and helping you to relate to all parts of you; even your ‘symptoms’ are actually in your side.

I originally trained psychodynamically at Goldsmiths College, University of London, on their postgraduate counselling training, and with Kings College London and the Institute of Psychiatry.

I have practiced as a counsellor and psychological therapist in GP surgeries. If it helps I often combine EMDR (processing trauma) with  Internal family systems’ therapy.

If you have relationship problems, anxiety or depression, or obsessive thinking, chronic pain, panic, phobias, sleep problems, self-defeating behaviour, hopelessness, lack of confidence, family difficulties, addictions, i can help you.

I have received many very positive testimonials from clients. My view is that all parts of you are trying to help you and we ought to have a relationship with all parts of you.

If you would like to come for counselling and therapy, i can see you in person in Canterbury or online or a mix of both.

Online (Zoom) is not second best, i  some respects for those with avoidance, pain and movement issues, disability or agoraphobia - online is a valuable resource.

Practice description

Johnnie worked with my 18-year-old son for about 16 months. My son felt a rapport quickly and felt safe and supported whilst working through several issues that there worrying for him. Their work was entirely their own and private but as a parent I have been able to watch my son grow from someone of self-doubt and anxiety into someone who has learnt to manage his worries rationally. Best of all, he views himself more positively. I value the work they've done and every time I hear my son speaking positively and rationally about issues he previously found debilitating, I know this was a great investment." (SDR).

"Hello Johnnie, i wanted to say thank you. You are a wonderful therapist, beautifully evidenced by your clients. It was pleasure to work with you." (SM university supervisor).

"I am writing to you because I did not say thank you for your help, listening to me during my troubled times. You have a calm voice and a relaxed and friendly manner, which made you an easy person to talk to, working through problems, talking to someone impartial does help. I hope you help many more people in the future. Thanks again." (JD CBT female patient).

"Just a note to say 'thank you'. You elevated what I had seen as silly/shameful to the sacred and you opened my eyes (but more importantly my heart) to new dimensions I have yet to fully explore." (trainee clinical psychologist, CM).

“You’re a brilliant therapist and a wonderful person… i feel blessed to have known you, and it was a privilege to have worked with you.” (KT)

Practice description

In terms of my practice, let me explain my process with regard to constant worrying and intrusive thoughts.

I have tried to treat ‘OCD’ for many years, and it is difficult to shift even with CBT and ERP (exposure response prevention)

My view is OCD is now understood as a trauma and the ‘OCD part’ thinks it is trying to protect you.

It is a protective part of your nervous system with elaborate and intensive approaches to protect you. It doesn’t realise it is hurting you.

How do we treat OCD? By using EMDR to process the initial trauma. And then we use parts’ therapy to begin to befriend your OCD and see how it is doing, and how it can be helped.

You can develop have a conversation with it and realise you are both suffering.

You cannot get rid of it - it will only get worse as it will feel under attack.

Your OCD is like a little person inside you that is frightened and is protecting itself on overdrive.

So i’d approach your problem with EMDR and parts’ therapy, or some call it Internal Family Systems therapy.

We begin by saying hello to it. Try it now: say hello and how are you?

When we combine trauma processing and communicating with self there is a dramatic change to one’s relationship with you self.

About me and my therapy practice

I have practiced in the NHS for around 20 years, as a mental health crisis team manager, as a liaison psychiatry clinical specialist, and as a psychological therapist in a GP surgery, with IAPT, and local clinics.

I have postgraduate NHS training in cognitive behavioural therapy; and qualified as an EMDR therapist, currently under group supervision.

My background is grounded in psychodynamic, Jungian and relational approaches to therapy.

Practice description

I trained at Goldsmiths College, University of London, on their postgraduate counselling training, and with Deptford Psychotherapy Centre.

I then studied at the Independent Group of Analytical Psychology while under Jungian analysis for several years.

I have practiced in the NHS for around 20 years, as a mental health crisis team manager, as a liaison psychiatry clinical specialist, and as a psychological therapist in NHS settings. I have found that i can contain cases because of my NHS experience.

I have worked closely with Consultant Psychiatrists in NHS settings for many years. I have experience of biopsychosocial conceptualisation, and management of difficult cases.

I an particularly interested in Jungian and post-Jungian approaches to personal growth and individuation.I am happy to arrange sessions online.

I have an MSc from the University of Kent. I enjoy hiking, Vipassana meditation, and gardening. I have enhanced DBS clearance.

My first session

I tend to explore 'in the room' our engagement to understand the clinical process of the supervisee and their client.

This might include some discovery of unconscious process and for example considering unconscious motivations of the client and the supervisee.

Issues that crop up are 'psychiatric' considerations, around the 'frame' and 'projective identification', 'parallel processing', preverbal issues, containment and holding etc.

I have been in a psychoanalytic supervision group for several years and find the clinical presentations are often acted out within the supervision session inviting opportunities for insight and interpretation.

I normally offer supervision monthly in Canterbury in person or online.Thank you.
