About me and my therapy practice

Hello I'm Nicola, I decided to retrain as a Counsellor after seeking help myself following a sudden bereavement. My training highlighted the fact that I had always been drawn to jobs where I was able to offer support to others people at very difficult times in their lives. I qualified as a Person-centred Counsellor in August 2019.  During the last two years of my training I was honoured to provide counselling support to carers via a local charity,  Durham County Carers and I also spent a short time supporting children at a local primary school. I also work as a moderator for North Lakes Counselling and Training in Cumbria.

I believe every client has a drive to get the support they need when they are ready. Finding a therapist who is the right fit is the key to successful counselling work: feeling safe, comfortable and supported in every counselling sessions is essential. In my work, I ensure the working relationship I have with my clients is warm, non-judgemental and honest. I adapt my style of counselling to each individual client, sometimes working creatively to offer alternative ways to help client's explore their issues and find their own resolutions. This can include suggesting activities, sharing poems or finding news ways to express feelings and emotions. I also know how powerful it is to be listened to and heard or to be allowed to sit in silence to reflect.

When a client initially ,contacts me I arrange an initial 20-30 minute telephone call in order that we can assess whether we are a good fit and whether I have the right skills to meet your needs. I review our work together regularly and encourage my client's to be honest about their needs and expectations.

Practice description

I started my practice in early 2020 after creating a purpose built Counselling room in our large and private garden. Due to the pandemic my vision and plans had to adapt and after completing additional online and telephone counselling training I began working with client's. I currently work remotely, from my garden retreat, and I currently offer telephone counselling. I find this way of working very different to face to face work. It has many positive aspects - it's convenient, it feels less intimidating but also has an way of allowing client's to feel more able to share their feelings and fears.

I am hoping to re-open my therapy room to client's to share the calm and peaceful retreat we have created. I will only do this when it feels safe for myself and my clients.

I am also hoping to offer local walk and talk sessions at a local nature reserve and will eventually extend my remote counselling to online counselling via zoom - if this is something you would prefer please let me know.  Reduced rates are available for student counsellors.

My first session

The practical side of our working together will usually be discussed at our initial telephone call prior to your first session. All sessions are prepaid.

During your first session we would usually spend approximately 10-15 minutes discussing and agreeing our working contract. Once this formality is out of the way the session time will be yours to use however you feel is most appropriate for you. Sometimes client's like to get me "up to speed" with what is happening for them or share their reasons for seeking emotional support. Sometimes the first session can be a much needed chance to offload all the emotions and issues they are facing. My way of working believes that the client is the expert in themselves. It is my role to stay with the client, work at whatever pace they choose and work with whatever the client brings. This first session has no rules, if you find it difficult to share initially, we can take time for you to build your trust in me. If you discover now is not the right time for you that is fine too.
