About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I’m Tom!

If you’re reading my profile, then chances are either you or someone you love is having a really hard time at the moment. Before I introduce myself properly, I just want you to know that you are not alone and I'm here to help. Thinking about getting support can feel scary and difficult – and making that decision to pick up the phone or go to your first counselling session can feel terrifying.

I know this because a long time ago it was me making that first phone call too.

I began working as a counsellor during the Covid-19 pandemic. I am hugely passionate about the power of good counselling, and being able to talk to a real person who is not directly involved in your own life. Work, home life, stress, relationships – this can all have a massive impact on our mental health and can feel totally overwhelming.

I’m what we call a “Person-Centred” counsellor. This means that I believe that counselling should be all about you, and that as your counsellor I am not an expert in your life. I’m not here to judge you, analyse you or tell you what to think or to feel. In our sessions together, my goal is to empower you to talk about whatever you want to. I don’t set an agenda – I work entirely for you. My job is to listen to you and care about what you are going through. If there are any answers to find, then we can work to find them together.

I cover a wide range of topics and issues, all of which can be really challenging and difficult for people. Some examples are depression, anxiety, anger, trauma, addiction, abuse, sexual assault, relationships, grief, self-harm and suicide. No subject is ever off limits with me – like I said – my job is simply to listen and work with you as your ally.

I am also the Practice Manager at Southampton Counselling Practice and I have been published in HuffPost, Happiful and Sainsbury's Lifestyle magazine covering mental health issues.

Practice description

Confidentiality & Safeguarding

The most important ethical rule I am required to follow is confidentiality, and it’s simple. What you say to me, stays with me. The only exception is if you tell me something where there is a serious and immediate threat to someone’s life, or to a child under the age of 18. And if you did, I’d work with you during our session to find the best outcome to keep you and that person safe.

Working with Young People & Families

I worked for the young person's charity, No Limits, before going into private practice. It is always a privilege to work with young people and their families, however young people today face enormous pressure, as do their parents.

My clinical experience includes working with a young person's mental health crisis team during Covid, and I've supported young people with a wide range of issues. I had counselling myself as a teenager and remember well the experiences I had, that informs how I work today.

I offer a flexible approach where I may work with the young person individually, as well as supporting parents in how to best look after their child's mental health. I also work in family settings and help work on improving empathy, understanding and communication between different family members.

Working with Couples

As a Person-Centred therapist, my role is to never take sides or tell my clients what to do. I work without judgement and instead help my clients listen to each other and explore their feelings within the relationship whilst in a safe space.

By increasing empathy for each other this can lead to better communication and understanding, and resolve conflict. Equally, couples therapy is not always about trying to save the relationship, and instead seek maximum closure and compassion for couples who might decide to part ways, and instead create an amicable relationship for the purposes of co-parenting, etc.

Session Rates (fixed for 2023)

Individuals (50 Mins) - £50

Couples & Families (60 Mins) - £70
