About me and my therapy practice

I am open, friendly, easy to talk to and always try to put people at their ease because I know it can be difficult to take that first step.

My approach is to create a warm, relaxed and supportive environment in which you can contemplate what you hope to achieve from counselling.

Sometimes life can become complex and when it does the best advice that anyone can give to you, is to take some time and space for yourself.

AT THE MOMENT I AM OFFERING TELEPHONE COUNSELLING TO CLIENTS AT THE RATE OF £40 PER HOUR.

Practice description

I qualified in counselling and psychotherpy in 2003 and continued with my learning to master's degree.  I am also a Supervisor to other counsellors and students.

I see clients through my independent private practice for short-term or long-term work, covering a range of issues;- from the break up of a relationship, bereavement, work-related issues, career change, family issues, health related issues; feeling fearful or anxious, feeling brain fog or as if the brain is not working as it should, or perhaps you feel at a crossroads in life?

I also work with couples and relationship issues.  As well as counselling skills - I am also trained in conflict resolution and mediation.

I work from the Humanistic approach that has its roots in philosophy - believing each one of us holds the key to our own inner wisdom.

My private practice is situated close to Nowton Park.

My first session

Our first session of counselling is for you to come along to see if counselling and the counsellor feels right for you.

Research suggests that it is very important you find a counsllor or therapist who feels right for you - trust your instincts on this.

Ask yourself if you feel safe with your counsellor?  Do you like their manner or attitude toward you?  Do you trust them?  Can you be open with them?

Research shows that if you do not feel comfortable with your counsellor, the higher the likelihood of a an unsuccessful outcome.

That's why I offer the first session at a reduced fee of £40 per hour (excluding couple counselling) so that you can come along and explore how you feel about counselling and see if it feels right for you?

There will be no follow-up call from me, it is entirely in your hand if you wish to return.

About me and my therapy practice

I offer a supportive environment in which you can contemplate and reflect upon your casework. I will work with you in a collaborative way to share knowledge and understanding.

My supervisory style is to invite you to reflect upon what’s going well; what works; and how to create more of it. I find this initiates enthusiasm, energy and a passion for what you do. This is based on strengths based change or ‘Appreciative Inquiry’ developed by Julie Barnes.

Practice description

Before becoming a supervisor to other counsellors and students of counselling, I thought about my own experiences of receiving feedback at school, college, university and in my job as a senior manager in the NHS.

I also reflected upon my own supervision and how my supervisor creates a warm and safe environment.  Any serious issues are treated with respect and thought through very carefully.  My Supervisor is wise, witty, warm, with a brilliant sense of humour.

I see my Supervisor as my 'good enough mother':  Donal Wnnicot (1990).  If I feel held and cared for, then I can hold and care for my supervisee, who in turn can hold and care for their client.

On my Supervision course I was given a handout on 'Qualities in Supervision',  I circled the following;- imaginative, curious, enjoying ideas, flexible, open, interested, knowledgeable, nurturing, genuine and supportive.

A journey of minds working in the best interests of the client.

My first session

In our first session we will talk about what you would like from supervision and formulate a contract so that I have a clear idea of what you hope to gain from supervision.

This contract can evolve with you alongside our relationship and offers a basis for discussion or amendment at some future date, should anything change or if the supervisee feels unhappy with the service on offer.

It's about being open and transparent.  I am always mindful that if I am offering a service and receiving payment for that service: I want to make sure the service is just, fair and open to scrutiny.
