About me and my therapy practice

I know it can be a bit bewildering choosing a counsellor and upfront I want to say my aim as a therapist is to be useful and helpful to you whatever your situation.

I work by listening carefully to what you're experiencing now and help you to clarify what it is that is troubling you. I then look to help you start to make sense of what it is you're experiencing, your feelings and thoughts. We might work to relate your here and now problems to past relationships and situations that could be feeding into your problems now.

The ultimate aim of therapy is to help you grow and mature as an adult and at the same time learn how to reconnect with yourself in a way that is nurturing and kind to what I call your 'wounded inner child'. Therapy seeks to help you recover from past traumas and relational deficits and develop new skills and attitudes that enable you to nurture more satisfying relationships and a life that makes you happier.

Practice description

My work now is mostly back to face to face, or a blend of face to face and online.  I work privately from home premises where I have my office and my room and way of working face to face is compliant with COVID safety precautions.

Each therapy session is £50 for one hour and normally weekly although some people want fortnightly sessions and some two or three sessions a week. For some clients it is enough to work simply talking and reflecting together or maybe making use of drawing or other creative mediums.

I seek to work in a way that works for you and will ask you regularly how you’re finding our work together and how you feel between sessions. When it comes to ending it is most useful to work towards an agreed ending where possible.

My first session

In a first session we have the chance to get a sense of one another and see if there is a basic rapport. I will need to hear something about what brings you to counselling and you may have questions about me and how we might work together.

I will talk you through my contract and amend it to include anything you think necessary for us to work well together and meet your therapy needs.

I will also be interested to know about any previous counselling experiences and whether you are on any medication or have any specific practical requirements.

My aim is to provide a safe, secure, confidential and respectful first meeting where you feel able to begin to explore what you want from therapy.

About me and my therapy practice

To date I have written and delivered two workshops: 'Your Inner Child' and 'Shame'. I have been delivering these workshops to counsellors and psychotherapists throughout the UK since 2015. Both workshops are written from a developmentally based, relationally focused approach to Integrative Psychotherapy.

Training groups in person are capped at 20 participants and on zoom 12 participants. Keeping the numbers small allows for experientially focussed work to take place in a secure and confidential environment.

Most in person workshops are delivered at one of the Jury's Inn hotels where the amenities are comfortable.

The price is £85 a day for in person and £75 for zoom workshops.

The day usually starts at 10am to 4.30pm with two 15 minute breaks and an hour for lunch. Refreshments are provided throughout the day and you are asked to sort you own lunch out.

A CPD certificate will be provided following the training day along with any slides, handouts and a bibliography. As a rule the workshop is facilitated experientially.

Before the workshop you are normally asked to complete a short pre-workshop reflection to help you prepare for the group work.

Bespoke trainings for organisations can also be arranged. Please contact me, Catherine on 07875 816 205.

Practice description

Your Inner Child Workshop (1 or 2 day workshop). A second workshop day helps participants to embed the inner child model presented during day 1 into their lives and clinical practice.

Interactive – Practical – Experiential

The focus of this workshop is on how to effectively work with adults to help them process childhood trauma and shame using the wounded inner child metaphor, whilst at the same time nurturing their most adult self and liberating their eternal inner child.

Throughout the day I will share my clinical model of inner child work, drawing on my clinical experience, research and theoretical underpinnings.

During the workshop you will be facilitated to explore your own experiences of connecting with your wounded inner child as well as your experiences clinically of working with the client and their wounded inner child. Participants will be invited to reflect on themselves and their client work from within the inner child model being presented in the workshop. To help the day be as experiential and participative as possible I do not use PowerPoint. Prior to the workshop I will ask you to complete a short pre-workshop assignment which will help you to get the most out of the workshop day.

About me and my therapy practice

Mostly my supervision work is presently online or over the phone. I work from my home based office.

My approach as a clinical supervisor is to focus on the whole person as they work or train as a counsellor / psychotherapist. I seek to provide a supportive and confidential setting for supervisees to critically reflect on everything pertinent to understanding themselves in relation to their client. I also support supervisees as they navigate setting up, managing and growing their private practice or portfolio working. Whether a supervisee is newly qualified, very experienced or in training, I seek to support them to critically reflect on their practice and relate their client work to relevant theory and research and vice versa. I seek to work in an engaged and creative way that helps you grow in self-confidence and knowledge as a practitioner.

I also provide academic supervision which students find helpful, often alongside clinical supervision or as an integrated part of supervision whilst training.

I work with a wide range of people including qualified and trainee counsellors and psychotherapists on Diploma, Undergraduate and Post-Graduate courses. I work with therapists trained in a different modality to me as an Integrative Psychotherapist including Art, Drama and Movement Therapists. I enjoy working equally with individuals and groups.

I have provided clinical supervision for private therapists for several years and I have a Diploma in Supervision from the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute, Nottingham. I enjoy working as a supervisor and would love to hear from you.

Practice description

I work from home premises. I seek to be flexible and I am willing to accommodate the needs of supervisees in terms of duration, frequency of meeting, face to face and/or online and/or phone.

I am trained as a relational developmental Integrative Psychotherapist and seek to support supervisees in their own modality as far as possible.

Whether you are a student, newly qualified or an experienced therapist, I seek to provide a secure, attuned, reflective space to inquire, review, experiment and learn from your experiences. I look to help supervisees develop clinically and to connect theory and research to practice in a way that brings enthusiasm and satisfaction.

I realise that to get the most out of supervision we need to make ourselves vulnerable and I like to think my way of working reduces the impact of shame and makes supervision a rewarding and positive experience for us both. I seek to be non-defensive yet potent and authoritative.

My first session

When we meet for a first session this is an opportunity for us both to check out 'the fit'. I am interested to know what your past and most recent supervision experiences have been like for you and I seek to help you put into words what you want from supervision with me going forwards. This can then be reflected in our working agreement. Likewise if you have any practical requirements or learning needs I would want to be aware of these so that I can be supportive of you.

I like to encourage and support supervisees to review their supervision regularly so that we can create the type of supervision that really supports you to grow as a therapist and in your practice.

I charge £60 for an hour long session and this includes the initial meeting.
