About me and my therapy practice

People consider seeing a therapist for a variety of reasons - perhaps you've reached a point in your life where you struggle to find meaning in your relationships or make sense of the world around you; perhaps work life is dominating your home life or vice versa, or perhaps life concerns, anxieties or grief are becoming too much to cope with, making daily life dysfunctional?

If you feel the need to share your experiences with more than just a friend or work colleague, then seeking a confidential and supportive therapeutic relationship may be the best way forward.

I'm Martin, a degree-qualified counsellor (Integrative Relational Therapy) and Registered Member of the BACP. I have worked with a wide range of people from teenagers to older adults from various social, racial and economic backgrounds and draw from a variety of theoretical approaches to support my work, enabling me to support you in exploring your past, present or future concerns, whilst together unpicking some of the difficulties or issues you might be facing, from my home in a safe and secure environment.

If you’re looking for a calm and relaxed therapeutic space to explore your difficulties or struggles in life with an empathic, non-judgemental counsellor and would like to self-refer for an initial assessment session, we can discuss your individual needs about what you would like to gain from either short term or long term therapy.

Practice description

Offering individual and couples therapy sessions. Individual sessions can be online or in-person.  Couples sessions are only conducted in-person.

Coming to couples sessions doesn't have to be limited to your life partner; it can also be family members, such as parent/child or siblings, if you want to explore and talk about issues and concerns between you to better your communication.

I'm often described as working in a 'straight forward' way without using complex, difficult language or 'therapy speak'.  Most tend to find this refreshing and easier to connect with, making the therapeutic relationship that develops between us feel more real and grounded.

My first session

You will fill out a couple of basic forms in the first session, such as name, address, DOB etc, (takes around 5 minutes), and then we'd get straight into it, exploring your reasons for coming and your goals and ambitions for therapy.

Form filling is usually called an 'assessment' although rest assured, this is not a judgemental process of any kind!  I would be interested in speaking with you during this first session about how compatible both you and I feel with each other and whether having on-going sessions would feel right with each other.  This can only really be discovered once we begin talking and usually towards the end of the session. I believe that it is important to find the right therapist for you, one that you can feel comfortable with to share yourself.  The same is true from my perspective - that I feel that I am the right person for you too.

Engaging in therapy successfully is about more than just offloading your deeper secrets and concerns to another person in-session, but about building a trusting relationship with the therapist in order to discover and learn about yourself more fully, as therapy is fundamentally about change.  Change occurs over time through exploring oneself using the company of another person to support that process.  This is why I think it's important to find the right person to speak with, have listen to you, as well as challenge you.  Change and growth is usually not without pain, so a comforting, trusted other to go through this with is important.

My intention from the first session onwards is to be a therapist that is focused on being effective through being attentive and supportive to your emotional and psychological needs so you have the best platform with which to find inner change.
