About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Joanna. I am a qualified counsellor working in private practice. I'm currently working online only. Before that I completed a successful placement within an NHS setting, and went on to set up and manage a counselling team within a young people's charity.
Prior work experience includes a range of educational and housing posts, often with a support/mentoring element.
I am a warm and caring counsellor and can offer you a safe space to talk through the challenges you are currently facing and the struggles you may be dealing with at this time. Over the years clients have come to me with all kinds of issues and sometimes worry that it isn't important enough for counselling - I generally say that if it feels important to them, then it's important enough for counselling.
Sometimes things can feel very tricky and we may feel that situations are hopeless, or not really know how to make sense of them, but working with a counsellor can be positive as it allows us to work through issues and get back to being a better version of us. I am able to walk with you on that journey.
Taking that initial step can feel really hard, and scary, but once we take it, that's when things can change.
I have both personal and professional experience of working with people on the autistic spectrum, including those with Asperger's.
I have experienced a life changing health situation, which I believe gives me added insight into those circumstances.
I am a Christian and also trained in spiritual accompaniment.
I would describe myself as an integrative and person-centred counsellor. That means, I'm focusing on working in a way which is most helpful to you - different types of therapies work better for different people. And I make sure to explain them to clients too.
Being integrative means I've trained in different ways of working. You might have heard of TA,CBT or EFT perhaps, so it means we don't work in just one way or style, but we can take useful tools from different styles of working.
My first session
Our first session together is a very informal assessment. If you're anxious about it, it's okay to have someone with you on the call.
I'm always curious to hear what's led someone to think about counselling at this time, and if they have had previous counselling experiences.
I ask lots of general stuff and it gives you the chance to ask me whatever you need to as well.
At the end of that first counselling session I always ask if the person wants to book a session at that point or go away and think about it. It's your choice and decision if you feel now is the right time.
