About me and my therapy practice

What would you like to talk about today? It’s a common enough starting point in counselling sessions, but it is rarely a question with an easy answer.

If you are feeling depressed or anxious, struggling to connect with others or even yourself, then we can navigate those issues together.

I offer effective, affordable therapy, and as a BACP-registered counsellor working in London Bridge and via Zoom, I can help you to change the way you respond to them and difficult feelings you may be having. I have also worked extensively with LGBT+ clients, both in private practice and with an LGBT+ specialist charity.

I offer a free half-hour initial appointment to discuss how we could work together.

My experience and approach

My approach can be boiled down to three words: change through insight.

I’m a humanistic counsellor, and our relationship will be the biggest asset in working for change. It provides a space for you to know that your feelings and needs are accepted, which is often the first step to being able to explore them in depth. Understanding why we feel and act the way we do can help gain the clarity you need to make decisions on how to implement change.

I know that counselling can be an intimidating experience, especially if you're not sure where to start. We can tailor how we work together so you feel secure enough to engage with the process. You can find out more about my working style at www.andrewmickel.co.uk.

Practice description

I trained for three years at the well-respected Metanoia Institute, and have a diploma and BSc in humanistic counselling, and draw on person-centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis traditions in order to find the best way to work with you. I have also counselled at both MCPS in Ealing and ELOP in Walthamstow.

I am registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and my work is fully insured and supervised.

I have worked with a wide variety of groups. That includes a specialism working with people who identify as LGBT+, many of whom have previously struggled to find a non-judgemental counsellor who they felt comfortable sharing with. Whoever you are, we can shape how sessions look to what feels right for you.

Before counselling I worked in journalism and charity comms, as well as in the comedy industry (not, I should note, as a comedian). Journalism introduced me to a wide breadth of people, and the move to counselling felt logical: it offers a chance to work with others and see what they want to change, but at a much deeper, personal level. The comedy industry offered up a diversity of experience and ways of communication that I often feel surprised to find myself drawing on as a counsellor.

My first session

The most important factor in counselling is the relationship between the counsellor and the client, so an introductory session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We can talk about what issues have brought you to therapy and what you would like to achieve.

While my regular session rate is £50 for 50 minutes, I offer a free half-hour initial appointment.

If we agree to work together, then we will set you a weekly 50-minute time slot for us to have safe, confidential sessions. A weekly slot is the best way to find the stability needed to make change.
