My normal working days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 9-5pm although I can sometimes do a Thursday or Friday appointment. I can also do early evening appointments after 5pm by arrangement. These appointments cost £50 per 50 minute session.
About me and my therapy practice
I offer a counselling service for clients experiencing anxiety; panic attacks; depression; break-down in relationships; bereavement; stress at work or home; domestic abuse; loss of confidence/ self-esteem. The list is not exhaustive so do please get in touch if you would like to discuss things before you make an appointment. You can also look at my website: www.smartcounselling.org.uk for more information.
I offer a service for EAP or other organisations. As an Employment Advisor for an NHS psychological therapy service, I have experience of helping people experiencing work related stress/anxiety and depression. Please contact me to discuss your requirements.
My approach to counselling is known as 'Person Centred'. The way we think, feel and behave, is often dictated by how we have been treated by the people closest to us in the past. Our perceptions of who we think we are often based on these early experiences but they do not always sit well with how we see ourselves now.
I use a non-directive and non-judgemental approach in counselling where you as the client decide what you want to bring to counselling. If later on in counselling we both agree that a more directive, solution focused or Cognitive Behavioural approach (CBT) is more appropriate then I can use some different techniques and strategies tailored to meet your individual needs.
I trained to be a Counsellor later in life so I bring to counselling a wide range of work and counselling experience. This includes working in educational and community settings (both youth and adult); as an Employment Advisor for IAPT the NHS mental health service provider; for mental health charities (delivering a confidence building course) and as a Counsellor for a Women's Health Advice Centre. I work with clients to help them make the most of their lives. We can't always change other people but we can change how we think, respond and react to others and adopt better coping strategies to deal with life's challenges.
Once you have contacted me we will arrange a first session (see above) where we will discuss what you hope to get from counselling and to ask any questions you may have about the process. For more details see my website.
My first session
The first session is an opportunity for you to see if counselling is something you want to engage with and is an opportunity for you to explore what you would like to work on even if perhaps you are unsure what is wrong. At the first session I will take some brief contact details; discuss confidentiality ; and explain a little of how I work. I use a brief mental health and well-being assessment which helps to understand how you are feeling mentally and physically. This is done again at the end of counselling and it is a huge encouragement for clients to see how they have moved on in their lives over the course of counselling. Most of all the first session is for you to feel comfortable with me as your counsellor and there is no obligation to continue should you decide this is not for you.
