About me and my therapy practice
Deciding whether and how counselling may be helpful can be a difficult first step. I can help with this in a brief telephone conversation or through email contact. If I cannot respond immediately, I will usually contact you within 24 hours (Monday to Friday). We can then arrange a time for a first session.
Being open and adaptable is at the centre of my therapy approach and working together with you, I use methods that best suit your needs and preferences. My approach is integrative, and I can use various counselling and therapy methods and skills including:
• EMDR - recommended for people who are distressed by trauma experiences and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can also be used for any upsetting and intrusive memories, dreams or nightmares; from childhood or more recent events.
• Psychodynamic and Person-Centred Counselling, Transactional Analysis (TA), Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can all help with a wide variety of difficulties.
• As a trained Mindfulness practitioner, I integrate aspects of mindfulness into therapy sessions. I can also provide support through a mindfulness-based programme if preferred.
Through my counselling and therapy experience of more than 20 years I have worked in diverse settings. This includes with private clients, for charities, the NHS and Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs). I also work longer term and have experience in education and universities. I am an established counselling supervisor currently employed part-time by the NHS.
Currently I am working online through video conferencing (Zoom) or telephone therapy and in person in central York including evening appointments.
The room I use in York is accessible by public transport or car, with public car parks within 5 minutes walk. My room is discretely located within a professional wellbeing centre.

My first session
During the first session we can talk about what has brought you to therapy and how you would like us to work together. I will recommend how we might best approach the issues you are bringing and I will explain how I think I can help or suggest alternative support.
If you are uncertain about whether therapy is right for you, this will be an opportunity to ask questions, explore your difficulties and get to know more about how it may help you. I do not require a commitment to a number of sessions however, we can talk about what may be most helpful considering your needs.
I will usually invite you to share details of your background in order to make an assessment of the nature of the issues you bring. It also helps me to know if you have had counselling or any type of therapy before, to understand what has helped or not been helpful to you in the past.
If you wish to proceed with further sessions then we can make an agreement and confirm practical arrangements. Of course, you can always try a session or two to see how my approach fits with your preferences.
