About me and my therapy practice
Deciding whether and how counselling may be helpful can be a difficult first step for some people. I can help with this in an initial brief telephone conversation or through email contact. If I am not able to respond immediately, I will contact you within 24 hours. On the basis of this contact, we can then arrange a time for a first session, followed by weekly or fortnightly sessions as appropriate and mutually convenient.
Currently I am providing therapy sessions by telephone or online through a video conferencing app such as Zoom or Skype. Most of my clients have adapted well to these formats and have found them to be effective in meeting their needs. We can consider whether this is appropriate for you at our first contact.
Being open and adaptable is at the centre of my therapy approach and working together with you I aim to suit your needs and preferences. My approach is integrative, so I use a mix of counselling and therapy methods and skills as follows:
• Psychodynamic and Person-Centred Counselling, Transactional Analysis (TA), Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
• For many people who may be distressed by traumatic experiences, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, distressing and intrusive memories from childhood or more recently; Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a most effective approach.
• As a trained Mindfulness practitioner, I integrate aspects of mindfulness into counselling sessions. Or if you prefer, I can offer individual guidance through a mindfulness-based programme.
So whether you are having difficulties with: low mood, depression, anxiety, health, family, relationships, work problems or trauma, phobia and distressing memories– I am happy to talk with you about how I can help.
My first session
During the first session we can talk about what has brought you to therapy and how you would like us to work together. I will share details about how we might approach the issues you are bringing and I will explain how I may be able to help.
If you are uncertain about whether therapy is right for you, this will be an opportunity to ask questions, explore your difficulties and get to know more about how it may help you. I do not require a commitment to a number of sessions, however we can talk about what may be most helpful considering your needs.
I will usually invite you to share details of your background in order to make an informed assessment about the issues you bring. It also helps me to know if you have had counselling or any type of therapy before, to understand what has helped or not been helpful to you in the past.
If you wish to proceed with further sessions then we can make an agreement and confirm practical arrangements. Of course, you can always try a session or two to trial the therapy relationship and to see how my approach fits with your preferences.
