About me and my therapy practice

In the first session I will work with you to explore the issues that you bring to therapy to identify what you hope to get from therapy and how I might be able to help. I take an approach based on person centered counselling combined with a mindfulness-behavioural approach called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). While we can explore how past events have impacted you, I would usually encourage you to focus on moving forwards in your life towards a full and valued way of living. We will look at what that means to you and what steps you can take in that direction. We will also identify the barriers to taking steps, often in the form of unwanted thoughts and emotions that you might seek to avoid. Instead of letting these direct your life you will learn skills based on mindfulness that can help you to be more accepting of these experiences and less caught up in them, so you can move forwards and live life more fully. Once you learn these skills you can apply them to many different aspects of life.

About me and my therapy practice

Originally I was a psychiatric nurse, mainly specialising in addictions and eating disorders. My counselling training was integrative humanistic. I have had indepth training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) which is now my main mode of therpay, while also drawing on my humanistic training. My supervision style is to develop a safe space where you feel able to share openly about your practice, and to facilitate you to reflect and develop as a practitioner. I have most to offer ACT and mindfulness practitioners.
