Practice description

Hello and welcome , I would like to introduce myself and give you an insight into how I work with individuals, couples and young people.

I was fortunate to train as a Person Centred Therapist over 20 years ago at Strathclyde University when Dave Mearns was the Director of the Counselling Unit and Mick Cooper was the lead in Research. Both are internationally recognised and their books will be on the shelves of many Counsellors.

As a Person Centred Therapist I offer unconditional positive regard, congruence and empathic understanding to my clients. In other words I will always accept and value you, be honest and transparent in how I perceive you and your world and try to walk in your shoes so that I can understand your experience.

While Person Centred therapy forms the foundation of my therapy style I have built upon this with skills from training in other modalities; Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Attachment Theory and Solution Focused Short Term Therapy.

I have been working online since lock down in March 2020 and have taken appropriate training to ensure that my clients have an experience as good as they would receive with face to face therapy. It is a different way of working but by no means second best.

Although I have just moved from Surrey to Ayrshire in Scotland I am still able to work with clients from all over the UK and I am delighted that all of my current clients have been able to move with me.

My first session

I would warmly invite you to call me for a chat over the phone to discuss your situation and needs. This is a great way to break the ice and enable you to feel more comfortable when we meet.

I do ask clients to complete some questionnaires before the first session which allows me to look at any levels of depression and anxiety which may be present.

The scores from these mood questionnaires are very useful to GP's should you need to discuss your situation with them for example if you need time off work or are considering medication.

At the moment I am working on line but hope to welcome clients back to my therapy room very soon.

About me and my therapy practice

I undertook my supervision training in 2007 with Elke Lambers affiliated with Person-Centred Therapy Britain and the Counselling Unit of Strathclyde University, Glasgow.

My qualification is the 'PCT Britain Post-Diploma Certificate in Supervision'

Both my counselling diploma and supervision training are Person Centred. I have a special interest in Attachment Theory and have undertaken extensive training with Lindy Cundy at The Wimbledon Guild Counselling Service. I have also studied CBT with Dr Adrian Hemmings; a course especially tailored for Counsellors trained in other modalities and Solution Focused Brief Therapy with Harvey Ratner and Chris Iveson (BRIEF).

My supervision style is Person Centred and I believe that the relationship between the supervisor and supervisee should be one which enables growth and understanding of the therapeutic relationship. I see my relationship with my supervisees as being one of mutual respect. I do not consider myself to be 'the expert' but I will ask questions about your clients and your work and draw upon my experiences over the last twenty or so years to share with you what I think might be helpful.

There may be times when events in your personal life at home or in the work place seem overwhelming and supervision may need to be more focused on your issues. While being mindful of boundaries and when personal therapy may be more appropriate my priority will your self-care so that you are able to practice to the best of your ability.

I also see my role as being available to discuss theoretical and ethical issues. I am also available to offer assistance with accreditation, by discussing or reading through your application, before it is submitted.
