About me and my therapy practice

Deciding to go into therapy is not an easy decision. It is a brave choice that is usually made because you are struggling to cope and have realised that help may be needed from someone other than friends and family, someone impartial and professionally trained. But how do you decide on a therapist? While a therapist's experience and training does matter a lot, the reality is that you will be sharing many private details and thoughts about your life with whoever you choose, so you need to have a strong sense that that person is right for you - that you will be able to form a strong and supportive relationship together.

In this profile I try to provide you with some sense of who I am and how I work, but often it is only by meeting face-to-face that you get a really good idea of whether it feels right. therefore offer a free initial session for us to meet and decide whether it feels right

In my private work I offer a quiet and safe therapeutic space where you can talk about your difficulties and think about the underlying causes, be these in the present or the past. I believe that therapy should be a dynamic, engaged and active process, a dialogue between two people where issues can be explored together and new meanings and understandings created. I listen deeply and without judgement to the content of what you tell me while also paying attention to the feelings and underlying issues that emerge through conversation; and I reflect back my understanding, feelings and thought processes to you.

The type of therapy I practice focuses on developing a greater awareness of your inner world, which in turn can help you to better understand your patterns and motivations and identify the issues and upsets that may keep recurring for you. It can help you to find a way to speak about things that are stuck, opening the door for a fresh perspective and leading to a fuller and more satisfying emotional life.

Practice description

I am an experienced psychodynamic psychotherapist and I work with young people and adults. I have worked in mental health for the past 18 years and have been a practicing therapist for 15 years combining private work with employment in various organisations including Cornwall College, Xenzone and Plymouth NHS Adult Mental Health Trust, where I worked with adults who had complex and long-term mental health needs. I have experience in many different areas of mental health including relationship problems, anxiety, depression, abuse, suicidal thoughts, self harm and bereavement. Many of the people I work with feel stuck or trapped in some way, in a job, or in themselves, or would like a greater sense of meaning in their lives. Some are struggling with their relationships and notice that the same difficulties keep coming up for them time and again.

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and abide by their Code of Ethics. I practice from a beautiful and discrete therapy centre called the Bird House, in the centre of Falmouth. I see some people for just a few sessions, but others I work with for a year or more. I like to work in depth so that people feel that they achieve not only symptom relief but also a deeper sense of themselves enabling them to become more resilient to what life might throw at them. Most people I see come for one session a week, but I am also trained to offer twice weekly therapy.
