About me and my therapy practice

I'm a friendly and supportive BACP accredited therapist with over 23 years’ experience of working with a wide range of issues. My experience also includes working with sexuality, gender and relationship diversities.

In my work, I draw from a number of traditions. More specifically, my training is humanistic and influenced by person-centred, psychodynamic and cognitive theories. My approach depends on the suitability for my client, and involves looking at the present problems, considering any underlying issues - and perhaps any early messages you were given about how you ‘should’ be. My training has developed my understanding of holistic health to include all aspects of what it means to be a healthy human being. I believe that health is a whole body/mind condition, and that we can positively affect our physical wellbeing by changing how we think or feel.

I see the therapeutic process as a collaborative partnership, one in which you feel safe. My aim is to help you by finding out how you see the world, how you make meaning of life, so that you can develop insight and self-understanding. By doing so, you will be able to make positive changes and live your life in a more satisfying way, enabling you to:

* Establish goals and have a clearer sense of direction

* Deal more effectively with problems and relationships

* Discover more options

* Feel more in control of your life

* Increase your confidence and sense of well-being

My first session

The consultation session is one where we meet to talk about your concerns or dilemmas, and explore how these may be helped by therapy, with me or someone else. This session gives you a chance to meet me and to see how I do things, as well as to ask any questions or seek advice without any obligation regarding further work. The length of the session is 60 minutes and the fee is £60.

We may agree to meet for a number of further sessions and agree on the type of therapeutic work we will do, the approach we will take and the goals needed to help you. In practice, this will involve deciding whether to work in a manner that is very focused upon outcomes regarding a particular difficulty or symptom, (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), or use sessions to explore general feelings, thoughts and behaviours (Counselling/Psychotherapy), or to combine the two in a way that seems helpful for you. We will discuss your response to this and find a way of working that fits your needs, and with which you feel happy. Occasionally, I may refer you elsewhere if I feel another service may better meet your requirements.

I will ask you regularly about your experiences of our work and invite on-going feedback and discussion. A review session takes place at the end of our agreed number of sessions when we will assess progress and what further work, if any, may be needed.

About me and my therapy practice

An Integrative Counsellor with over 24 years’ experience, I am BACP registered and accredited. I offer individual supervision to:

• qualified counsellors.

• individuals on counselling courses.

• other professionals who may benefit from, or are required to have, supervision external to their workplace (e.g. social workers and support workers).

I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling, a Diploma in Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy and a Certificate in Supervision.

I provide a supportive professional environment, one in which supervisees may bring their client work, explore ethical issues and develop professionally. I also bring my experience as a trainer of Counsellors to Certificate and Postgraduate level, which can be of value for supervisees to draw from.

Practice description

Encouraging the best from a Counsellor for the benefit of the clients is important in supervision. This is not dependent upon Supervisor and Counsellor sharing the same psychological model and way of working, as I see it as the Supervisor’s responsibility to learn how the Counsellor wants to work and support encourage and aid the development of that way of working.

I see my role as sometimes mentor, sometimes coach or consultant. Whichever it is, providing a consistent space and relationship, one in which the Counsellor can find his or her balance and trust in his or her abilities as a Counsellor, is important. I also recognise that sometimes a Counsellor may need nurture and support when faced with the reality of a client’s world.

A professional ethical frame of reference, and membership of one or other of professional organisations for counsellors, psychotherapists or psychologists is necessary for supervision to take place.

My first session

I offer an initial free meeting to potential supervisees, to explore the possibility of working together.
