About me and my therapy practice
I practice one-to-one integrative psychotherapy with adults, drawing on theories that shed light on human development, psychological functioning as well as current research. In particular, I use psychoanalytic theories that highlight interpersonal aspects of psychological functioning such as Object Relations and Attachment theory; and body-oriented psychotherapy. These theories share a central belief that humans are essentially social beings, and that the need for relationship is primary. How these needs are met in infancy/early childhood can significantly shape later relationships.
Implicit in my therapeutic approach is the aim of creating a holding, facilitating and empathic environment in which to relate to and make contact with the client. My approach is influenced by Rogers’ core conditions; his focus on the quality of relationship between therapist and client; and Kohut’s contribution that a client needs to feel accepted and understood before defensive patterns can be tackled.Drawing from contemporary psychoanalysis (influenced by Rogers), I place emphasis on working with the therapeutic relationship in the here-and-now, and viewing the therapeutic relationship as vehicle for deep change. I incorporate aspects of body-oriented psychotherapy paying attention to non-verbal communications, striving to attune to affects, gestures and rhythms of my client; by noticing my embodied counter transference and attempting to recognise the complexity of body-mind communications. I recognise that my own subjectivity impacts each therapeutic relationship.
I tend to ‘be with’ rather than ‘do things with a client’ although I do offer interpretations when I feel they might be useful.I believe that each client is unique with a capacity for self-healing although I also recognise each client’s limits, needs and capabilities.I work collaboratively inviting each client to participate in achieving his/her therapeutic goals.
