About me and my therapy practice
Throughout the counselling process my core approach is person centred demonstrating Rogers core conditions of being genuine, reflecting unconditional positive regard, empathy and being non- judgemental. After hearing the client’s presenting issues in the present, I then explore their present view of the past using psychodynamic theories. In doing so the client may identify positive or negative values and beliefs they developed in their childhood about themselves. CBT is used as required when working with some clients, it can help identify barriers, challenge fears and develop strategies to manage anxious situations.
Practice description
I provide counselling for adult male and female clients, children and adolescents. Issues range from depression, anxiety, bereavement, separation and relationship issues. I use an integrative approach in my practice; however, my core approach is person-centred.
As a counsellor I respect clients moral and cultural values. I don’t let issues of difference such as gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, race, ethnicity, age, national origin, politics or social class impact the therapeutic relationship.
Through careful contracting with clients we create balance and empower clients by demonstrating the core conditions such as unconditional positive regard, being non-judgemental, and trustworthy.
I work within the BACP ethical framework which highlights the need for equality within the counselling relationship. The ethical framework protects clients and counsellors by promoting transparency and equality between both. By adhering to the ethical guidelines. I strive to become the best possible counsellor which will benefit my clients.
My first session
To begin I inform clients of the counselling contract which outlines limitations of confidentiality, boundaries, cancellations policy and complaints procedures. I outline what counselling is and briefly explain how the sessions will flow, by exploring the clients present situation using person-centred model if required I will use gestalt techniques when working in the here and now this helps clients go deeper and experience the emotional distress in doing so the client can process emotions.
