About me and my therapy practice
I am a fully qualified and highly professional person-centred creative arts counsellor, specifically trained in working with children and young people aged from 5 years old upwards. As well as working in private practice, I have experience of working within local primary and secondary schools, offering one-to-one counselling sessions for a broad range of presenting issues including but not limited to anxiety, bereavement, relationship difficulties and identity.
I also have experience of group work, offering therapeutic support for bereavement and trauma and facilitation of a therapeutic story group within primary schools.
My way of working is person-centred which is firmly rooted in the belief that it is the unique relationship between the child/young person and their counsellor that is at the heart of the therapy. Through offering a safe, confidential space that is free of judgement within which the child or young person feels listened to and understood, the child/young person may feel empowered to express their feelings and experiences more openly and freely.
Though counselling is often considered a 'talking' therapy, I am also able to work in a person-centred way with art and image. Working with art and image can be a powerful way of communicating when it is often difficult to find the right words or understanding of a situation or experience is not quite clear. With younger children, I offer person-centred play therapy, enabling the child to communicate with me in a way that is age appropriate and natural to them.
The relationship between counsellor and client is truly unique and at the heart of successful therapy. My way of working strives to build a relationship with you or your child based on a deep trust that celebrates the uniqueness of us as individuals. As such, I do not offer solutions or advice but rather work with you to explore other perspectives. My way of working is deeply rooted in the understanding that we are our own experts and I am committed to being alongside you as we navigate the challenges and obstacles you are currently facing together.
I have a deep respect for our uniqueness as individuals and as such, do not offer a solution or advice. I am very aware that how I may resolve something is most likely to be very different from you. I trust that we all have the capacity to find our own solutions and that counselling is a supportive space within which to do this.
My first session
We may speak briefly on the telephone first so that I may find out a little more about you and how I might be able to support you. It is also a chance for you to ask any questions about how counselling works. As part of this call, we can arrange to meet either in-person or online for an initial appointment session should you choose to.
Our initial session together will be a chance for you to tell your story in more depth and for it to be heard with compassion and understanding. In deepening my understanding, I may enquire further as to how your experiencing is impacting you. Our emotional wellbeing is very much linked to our physical health and it is important to me that you have the opportunity to share with me all that you need and choose to.
