About me and my therapy practice

Is there a sense that life just doesn't feel quite right in some way. Do you feel that you are going through the motions and nothing seems to change. Are you struggling with relationships, work or a recent event or crises that has knocked you back. Perhaps you have experienced a loss whether that be a job, a relationship or loved one through bereavement. Or is the pain of your past feeling very much alive in your day to day life. You may be feeling overwhelmed, stressed or frustrated by your circumstances. 

It can be difficult to manage any one of these things on your own, that's why accessing talking therapy from a professional can be of tremendous benefit. Often we don't need more advice but rather a better understanding of ourselves, our relationships and our own experiences in order to make the changes we need. 

Whether you are coming with a here and now event or you want to explore some historical parts of yourself that may be interfering with your present, I work with an empathetic and non judgemental attitude fostered through a relational based approach. Having trained as an Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist I am able to utilise a range of skills and knowledge to provide a more nuanced understanding in addressing your individual needs. 

Practice description

As a Relational Psychotherapist and Counsellor my primary focus is developing a therapeutic relationship established on certain values and principles which I believe are central to the therapeutic process. This means I will respect your personal experiences, beliefs, culture, sexual orientation and religious affiliation. Our time together will be defined as a two person endeavour which means I will be actively engaged with you and your experiences. In this way I foster a collaborative and secure space whereby your thoughts, feelings and beliefs can be explored in an environment that feels safe.

I see my role as a facilitator, whereby I use my training, life experience and intuition to help guide you. In this way I support you to know what it means to have lived your life, helping you make meaning out of your personal encounters and interactions with others and the world. I work with understanding what matters to you, providing you the opportunity to recognise your innate values so that you can identify the choices that align best with who you are and the direction you want to take.

I am committed to encouraging the autonomy of those I work with, helping you cultivate a better understanding of your past and present experiences. I believe this insight can develop the capacity and potential to better connect, respond and attune with others and the world around you. I have worked with issues around healthy communication, anxiety, depression, anger, understanding and implementing boundaries, suicidal thoughts and I have a particular interest in working with those that have endured adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and relational trauma.

My first session

Making the decision to start therapy can in itself feel daunting and you may not know what kind of therapist you are looking for. Research has shown that therapeutic success relies a great deal on the strength of the relationship between the client and therapist and so it is important that you feel comfortable with who you are working with. This first session is an opportunity for you to ask questions and to consider whether you feel I am the right therapist for you.

I will also take some information about you and your reasons for seeking counselling and I will make some brief notes however I will not take notes during any future sessions. I would suggest you take some time after the session to decide on whether you would like to work with me and I am happy to answer any follow up questions you might have.
