About me and my therapy practice

A Counsellor and Psychotherapist with 35 years experience in both short and medium term work with individuals and couples.

I enjoy working with a wide range of issues, especially those connected with times of change in people's lives: whether in relationships, work or personal aspirations. I particularly enjoy working with young people and artists from many fields. (Students and working artists with low income would be eligible for a negotiated reduction in fee).

I work with older people as they make sense of their lives and am happy to visit clients in residential homes, hospices and hospitals.

My therapeutic style is varied, depending on the issue presented and the client's own styles of thinking, relating and experiencing their emotions. My psychodynamic training leads me to understand current issues as they relate to earlier experience; yet I will also work with patterns that emerge from present stressors and experiences using cognitive behavioural techniques.

My work experience ranges from work in private practice as a psychotherapist in New Zealand and the UK, receiving referrals from Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs), GPs, universities and governments. I've also been employed in the public sector, in both countries and in University Counselling Services. I have also worked as a tutor on counselling programmes, as a trainer of social workers, supervisor and 2 years as a Hospice volunteer.  I also have a strong interest in organisational dynamics, supervision of trainee therapists and clinical supervision generally.

About me and my therapy practice

My experience as a supervisor extends over 25 years, having originally trained with Peter Hawkins and Bath Associates as both a supervisor and trainer of supervisors. As a psychodynamically trained psychotherapist my supervision is informed by awareness of transferential processes, both in the supervison and in the relationships between the supervisee and their clients.

I have a strong ethical base, having experience in the management of complaints against counsellors in both the UK and New Zealand.

I enjoy supervising counsellors and psychotherapists as experienced workers, newly qualified or trainee therapists. I also supervise individuals, groups and teams as well as other workers in the caring professions.

I can also provide personal therapy to trainee counsellors, social workers, psychotherapists and psychologists.

My work experience ranges from work in the public sector, both in the UK and New Zealand; in University Counselling Services; and in private practice as a psychotherapist in New Zealand and the UK. I have also worked as a tutor on counselling programmes, as a trainer of social workers, clincial supervisor and 2 years as a Hospice volunteer in the United States.
