I offer counselling sessions between 7.45am and 7pm, Monday to Thursday.
My practice is online, via video.
Research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in person sessions. The many advantages to you as a client include::
• You can choose the right therapist for you, rather than having to pick based on location.
• You can be comfortable in your own surroundings. There's no need to travel anywhere and you may feel safer and more at ease to talk.
• Physical disabilities or psychological difficulties are no barrier to you getting the support you need.
If you’d like to find out more about how I work then you can book in for a free 15 minute introduction call by emailing me at enquiries@fernbankcounselling.co.uk
About me and my therapy practice
I'm a qualified and accredited integrative counsellor.
If aspects of your life currently feel challenging, or you have a sense that issues from your past continue to affect your life today, then I may be able to help you.
Experiences you’ve had may have left you feeling anxious or alone; you might believe that sharing your feelings with others would be too much for them or you worry that they’d judge you or see you differently.
I'm here to support you; to help you find your strengths and rebuild.
I work with a variety of issues but specialise in trauma work, loss/bereavement and serious illness and its impacts.
You may have had a difficult start to your life. I am experienced in working with trauma; specifically with survivors of childhood abuse, domestic abuse and sexual violence. I understand that how hard it is to face the ways in which these have impacted on you; you may feel 'different' to others, struggle with anxiety, isolation and feelings of shame or be unsure how to feel safe in new relationships.
Our work will help you find strategies to help you cope with some of that distress and then support you in safely processing the trauma that you've experienced.
Perhaps you find yourself facing a serious illness and could benefit from space to work through this; understanding how life now looks. You might have a loved one with a life-threatening illness and feel that you need to be strong for them, whilst struggling to cope, yourself. Perhaps someone close to you has died and you are struggling to deal with the impact of this. You may (now or in the past) have caring responsibilities that have meant it’s been hard to focus on who you are and what you need.
Our work will support you to explore these issues, to move forward into a life that is fulfilling for you, however that might look.
I hold a Postgraduate (level 7) Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, a level 6 Certificate in Trauma Therapy and am committed to ongoing training in the above issues.
Practice description
I believe that people are so much more than a label or a diagnosis.
I'm interested in hearing about how you’ve experienced the world around you, including important relationships and events that have shaped you. I'll listen carefully and ask gentle and respectful questions in order to discover the strengths and resources you have inside you, working compassionately with the issues that matter to you.
We will build a safe and trusting relationship together, so that you feel able to talk about your concerns without being judged and so we can discover what might be lying underneath the issues that brought you to therapy.
As an integrative counsellor I draw upon a variety of psychological theories to understand how human beings develop, learn and interact. My focus will be on valuing and accepting you as the unique individual that you are (Humanistic counselling), understanding how you have been shaped by your past experiences and how they affect you and your relationships (Psychodynamic therapy), and exploring the links between your thoughts, feelings and bodily responses to situations (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).
I also draw upon neuroscience to understand responses to stress and trauma and how to work with these.
In my work, if you would like to incorporate these, I use somatic and creative practices such as breathwork, EFT (commonly known as 'tapping') and visualisations - designed to help soothe and calm the body's nervous system so that you can safely process difficult or traumatic feelings and memories.
My first session
I believe that the key to successful therapy is the relationship between client and counsellor and our first session will build upon our initial conversation together. We'll further explore your needs, start to build a picture of what has been significant in your life so far and and ensure that you are completely happy with how I work.
We’ll discuss what it is that you’d like to get out of our working together, but you won’t be expected to tell me everything about yourself and your feelings immediately. I understand that it can take time to build trust.
Although our initial session will include quite a lot of questions as I find out about you, these will be asked respectfully and gently and subsequent sessions will be more led by you, based on what feels important to you. I may also ask you to complete some initial assessment tools which will help me to understand how things are for you right now and key areas of difficulty we may work on together.
We will discuss the number of sessions that you might wish to have initially and we will revisit this as we continue to work together. We will also discuss what might happen if you need to cancel appointments and I will explain key aspects of my practice such as confidentiality and how I store and protect your data.
