About me and my therapy practice

Hi, my name is Cheryl, I am an attachment, focused, relational, Integrative Psychotherapist/Counsellor. I offer an extensive wealth of experience, compassion and understanding in a safe space for you to explore, reflect, process and navigate life’s challenges and issues. I am certain you will find the answers from within and a path to healing and growth.

I am a fully qualified Llb (Hons), Pg Dip LPC, Counselling Cert, Pg Dip Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am a member of BACP, ensuring the highest standards of professional care and ethics. I am fully insured with Towergate and fully GDPR compliant.

As a wife, mother, adoptive parent former family solicitor and therapeutic foster parent I bring a unique wealth of knowledge, personal experience and nearly two decades of professional experience that informs my practice.

I work relationally because evidentially it is proven that the Client/Therapist relationship is paramount to successful outcomes.

I also welcome and embrace difference and diversity. Whilst I can't say I know everything; I am always keen to learn and accept everyone for who they are as individuals.

I cannot guarantee how many sessions a client may need depending upon what they bring to counselling. I often suggest 6 sessions with a review. There is an expectation in any therapeutic alliance of openness and honesty. I offer a safe, compassionate space to allow you to feel at ease and enable you to do this.

I offer integrated therapy as a Psychotherapist/Counsellor drawing primarily from person-centred therapy. I am knowledgeable and experienced to be able to integrate a range of other concepts and techniques into therapy collaboratively with my clients when appropriate. This could range from Psychodynamic and Attachment focused theory, Transactional Analysis - script and PAC work, Inner wounded child work -Internal Family Systems theory, Solution focused, Somatic healing, polyvagal and grounding techniques including breathwork and tapping.

Practice description

I believe it is beneficial to clients to offer and share some of my own varied life experiences and challenges faced and successfully navigated and overcome. This can often provide comfort that it is normal to struggle at times but that issues can be overcome.

I work with clients who may struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, attachment issues, or trauma related to relationships or family. In addition, parents or carers who may be suffering compassion fatigue and/or burn out, OR relational issues with your partner or children. During initial sessions we will explore the issues, collaborate and create a plan together to address them in a way that helps you get your life back on track. Most clients see a gradual lifting of symptoms within 4-6 weeks and sustained improvement thereafter.

For childhood trauma or relationship issues, I would use person-centred therapy to explore the here and now and presenting issues. I want to experience how a client feels and sees through their eyes to understand how they navigate the world around them. I may suggest psychodynamically exploring childhood and looking through an attachment- focused lens at how parenting or negative experiences may have shaped an individual, their values/beliefs. Additionally, what attachment style may have been adopted and proving unhelpful in adult life. Awareness can bring about greater awareness of how self and others relate and bring about change and growth. It can bring about closeness and connectedness as opposed to discord.

For child/adult trauma, this would be taken at a clients' pace. Undertaking grounding techniques and lifting the lid on trauma gently and for short periods with agreement as we gently build a window of tolerance and stabilisation to reduce symptoms.

I aim to offer you compassionate understanding and a safe, non-judgmental space, as you navigate your personal challenges, creating awareness, empowering change and decision making.

My first session

Understandably your first session may feel daunting but there is nothing to be concerned about. It is normal. We will get to know each other and discuss the issues you are having and perhaps undertake a little assessment of what goals you wish to make and discuss how they may be achieved.

I would ask that you attend appointments whether face to face or in person or by telephone 5-10 minutes early and that there is no one else present and you are free of interruptions so there can be absolute client confidentiality and a dedicated space just for you.

Sessions will be 50/55 minutes long. Video sessions will take place by Zoom or google meet.

I am confident we can achieve your desired goals and you feeling so much more relieved, confident and empowered going forword. I look forward to working with you.
